The jewel in the crown of Mexico’s live music scene is the Vive Latino festival. Now in its 17th year, this concert weekend takes place in the Foro Sol in Mexico City with important and upcoming bands from all over Ibero-America.  This year, 150,000 people gathered to hear the performances of 70 artists and groups from 18 countries, supported by loudspeakers from NEXO. An Allen & Heath dLive digital mixing system was used at front of house for Brazil’s annual Villa Mix festival, which takes place annually in Manaus. Supplied by PA company, Barra Som, the festival showcases ten of the country’s top country music artists, staged in the city’s huge Sambadrone. The system comprised the flagship S7000 Control Surface and DM64 MixRack. “It was very important that we had one system to manage the whole event, to eliminate any complexities with changing… View this story

Founded in 1933, Threadgill’s is a historic restaurant and live music house in Austin, Texas where well-known artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Willy Nelson and Janis Joplin have performed.  For the 2016 South by Southwest music festival (SXSW) Threadgill’s hosted multiple bands over several days on its outdoor stage equipped with dB Technologies line arrays, stage monitors and subwoofers. Jay Thomas, front of house engineer for Bob Schneider, an Austin-based artist, suggested to Threadgill’s that they replace the existing outdoor… View this story

Estereo Picnic is Colombia’s biggest live music event – staged in Bogota, the weekend festival is now in its seventh year, and attracted more than 50 national and international artists to perform on its three principal stages. This year, for the first time, NEXO’s flagship STM Series modular line array was in action on the Pepsi stage. Barry McKinnon 05/02/16 11:58 AM,
From the January 1989 issue of the late, great Recording Engineer/Producer (RE/P) magazine, Barry McKinnon interviews a pioneer of our industry. Every industry has its pioneers, those individuals who took the first stab at a field no one else considered or wanted to try, and the sound reinforcement industry is no different. Bill Hanley has been in the mobile sound reinforcement business for more than 30 years and has been involved with major artists and events such as the Beatles… View this story

Celebrating 30 years in 2016, the “South by Southwest Music and Media Conference” (SXSW) is a six-day event held every March in Austin, Texas (USA).  Allen & Heath’s digital mixers from across its dLive, GLD and Qu ranges were employed this year in many of the participating venues. Two dLive systems managed the popular British Music Embassy Showcase, hosted by Austin’s “Latitude 30” club and featuring 10 to 12 bands each day of the festival. A GLD-80 was installed at… View this story

For the past ten years, Roselle Park, New Jersey-based Audio Incorporated vice president Mike Sinclair and partner Stephen Tolve have provided the sound for the annual Freifhofers Saratoga Jazz Festival, with Sinclair mixing front of house for many of the acts. The system Sinclair selected for the 2015 Saratoga Jazz Festival consists of a 12-cabinet Renkus-Heinz VL3 “J” array on each side of the stage. “Jazz audiences are totally unforgiving,” notes Sinclair. “With jazz, it’s especially important that the PA… View this story

    M. Erik Matlock 04/20/16 11:17 AM,
Several times, over the course of working with my last crew, we had situations involving clients who didn’t hold up their end of the deal. It was fascinating and challenging to resolve these problems. On one festival stage, the client had followed only part of our standard agreement. The deposit was half of the fee for building a stage, sound system and lighting rig. The deal was that as soon as everything was in place and operational, the balance was… View this story

    Ike Zimbel 04/08/16 06:31 AM,
When I was coming up through the ranks at a sound company in the early 1980s, I did a lot of folk festivals. Within a few years I went from mixing a small satellite stage (with monitors from front of house) to main stage monitor mixer and then to main stage FOH mixer. During this process I transitioned from running my own show on the small stage to being an active participant in every changeover as the monitor engineer to… View this story

For the second year in a row, Georgia’s Savannah Music Festival is an all-Meyer Sound event, with sound systems reinforcing all five venues for amplified music. With more than 100 performances scheduled through April 9, this year marks the debut of Meyer Sound’s LEOPARD linear sound reinforcement system at the festival, providing sound at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. LEOPARD was specified for the venue by Chris Evans, the festival’s chief sound engineer. “LEOPARD really shined for the Pink… View this story
