According to worship leaders, what are the most important aspects of being a church sound operator? I’ve been doing an informal survey on this topic, asking worship leaders for their views. The answers have been surprising, at least to me. For example, to this point not one of them has mentioned that a sound operator should have musical talent. Nor have they brought up the value of having a critical ear when it comes to music. Maybe it’s my own…

Front of house engineer Robbie McGrath chose to deliver his mixes on a Midas PRO6 digital console for the recent comeback gigs by The Stone Roses in front of 225,000 fans at Manchester’s Heaton Park. McGrath, whose sound engineering credentials include some of rock music’s finest acts, including The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Kasabian, praised the PRO6 for its musical ability. “The head amps are incredible. I can set up the PRO6 the same way as I would a great…

I recall a club show on a tour I mixed where the house console had been moved under an extremely low balcony, placed all the way at the very back, and turned sideways! And, between me and the dance floor was a stairwell to a lower level that I had to detour around every time I went to check out what was actually happening in the room. Afternoon soundcheck started late, and the bandleader had to leave early. I plead…

Noted front-of-house engineer Martin Frey has endorsed EAW Red Certified KF740 line arrays for main PA loudspeakers and will specify them as first choice on all technical riders. Frey has mixed dozens of top artists from a wide range of musical genres, including Journey and Big & Rich. He is perhaps best known for his long-standing relationship with Alan Parsons, well-known as an artist with high standards for live performance audio reproduction. The agreement comes after Frey experienced the benefits…

One of the primary drivers in Rob Nevalainen’s career as a monitor engineer and in the founding of his Coquitlam, British Columbia-based audio rental house Gearforce is a passion for perfecting both his own skills and the equipment he works with. “There’s always new technology available and new methods of doing the job, so learning is something you can never stop doing,” he states. Since he got his start in the Vancouver club scene roughly 25 years ago, the 45-year-old…

People who work behind the scenes in the music business rarely receive public adulation. But Bob Ludwig, owner of Gateway Mastering & DVD in Portland, Maine, is a legitimate star in the world of music production, considered by many to be the best mastering engineer in the world. Ludwig’s career spans more than 40 years and some of the all-time biggest records, including AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” Rush’s “Moving Pictures,” and Journey’s “Escape.” Ludwig has also worked with Led Zeppelin,…

I don’t think this note is from the original LL Cool J. This other LL we have here needs to learn that you can’t put 100 prisoners in a correctional system bus made for 40. Watch as I reason gently with him … Dear Old Soundman— Welcome, LL! Please help. I currently run sound for an eight-piece group that includes a three-piece horn section. My problem is not getting a good clear sound; either I get the rhythm section to…

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of mixing a few times for a very talented rock band. The first show was a CD release party at a local all-ages club, and I got a call about an hour before the band was to take the stage. On the other end of the phone was the band’s bass player (an old friend), who asked me to come down and mix. They were the second band that night and had no…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. This post grew out of a breakout session at a Willow Creek Arts Conference a few years ago. The session was titled “Thriving at Front of House,” and speakers included Robert Scovill, Chris Gille and Scott Ragsdale. I give Scovi credit in advance for much of the content herein. As usual, it will be interspersed with my thoughts and commentary. I hear from younger sound guys (an occasionally older ones) that they don’t…

Beyond technical expertise and experience, Dave Natale stresses that one of the most important qualities a front of house mixer should possess is knowing how to deal with people. “Now, anybody who knows me and reads that will say, ‘Yeah. Your people skills… Great,” he laughs, admitting that he can be blunt with co-workers at times, but adding that talking around a problem doesn’t help anyone. “You have to tell people straight up what’s going on.” Natale’s ability to strip…
