The device commonly referred to as a “speaker” is more correctly referred to as a loudspeaker system. It is comprised of some transducers, a crossover network, an enclosure, and a few additional parts. Loudspeaker system designers must be familiar with the complicated interactions of the components that form the system. An assemblage of good parts does not guarantee a good system. (Note: For the remainder of this article I will refer to a loudspeaker system as simply a “loudspeaker.”) If…

EASERA SysTune is an audio measurement program from the Ahnert Feistel Media Group (AFMG), designed for real-time analysis of acoustic signals and aimed at those doing system alignment, tuning and live sound applications. SysTune is not a replacement or upgrade for the EASERA measurement program, but rather, it has its own unique features that allow it to perform measurement tasks not currently available in other measurement programs. More in-depth acoustical analysis of the measurements made with SysTune can be done…

L-Acoustics has announced that a new GLL (generic loudspeaker library) is now available for its WST systems, including KIVA, ARCS, KUDO and KARA. The development now provides complete compatibility between L-Acoustics’ SOUNDVISION and AFMG’s EASE software applications for acoustic source data, as well as for audience area. The new GLL format allows quick insertion and setup of L-Acoustics WST systems in EASE 4 system design software. The library provides line source radiation patterns, and audience area data can be shared…

Back in the good old days predicting the performance of a group of loudspeakers was a hit and miss proposition. We tried to hit all the people and miss the walls. We were happy if we had enough devices to point a transducer everywhere that needed coverage and enough power to make it good and loud. Complex interactions between devices operating in the same bandwidth, fine level adjustments for individual devices and precise flying angles were the least of our…

In Howard Community College’s Smith Theater in Columbia, Maryland, a typical day might include everything from theater and film to lectures and meetings, with the occasional live concert thrown in as well. With inputs ranging from a single voice up to 56 inputs and outputs that might be mono, stereo or full surround sound, it was critical that this multifunctional space have a sound system with maximum flexibility and sonic clarity. The college chose an Allen & Heath iLive-112 digital…

Will Allen Airshows present a series of breath-taking loops, hammerheads, spins, stalls, and other aerial maneuvers - all while Allen, known as the “Flying Tenor”, sings the national anthem of the United States and, occasionally, the anthem of Canadian live from the cockpit of his Decathlon (a two-seat fixed conventional gear light airplane). The aerobatic routine has been choreographed to harmonize with the cadence and crescendos of the anthems as Allen performs solo, with keyboard accompaniment emanating from terra firma.…

The Northbrook Theater in Northbrook, IL, has selected AKG DMS 700 digital wireless microphone systems to play a role in all 12 of its annual productions. The 300-seat theater recently upgraded to the DMS 700 systems, incorporating 12 DSR 700 receivers, 10 CK 77 Microphones, and 25 DPT 700 bodypacks. The theater is using AKG’s digital wireless system to drive a series of performances put on by youth, for youth. Performing Arts Supervisor Kurt Ottinger needed a system that came…

Britain’s Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the following years. The latest TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 earlier in 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC’s Studio 4, as part of this year’s Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival…

The annual July 4th concert performance at the Ft. Wayne campus of Indiana/Purdue University featured four local acts capped off by nationally known country singer Jo Dee Messina and a spectacular finale featuring the Ft. Wayne Symphony Orchestra performing in tandem with choreographed fireworks. To accommodate all of the performers, Sticha Bros, who’d been contracted for the event by Northern Productions of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, set up a larger 60- x 60-foot stage next to a smaller 60- x…
