As with all sizes of modular line array enclosures there are several designs in the “mini” genre, which we define as those with 7-inch “woofers”. The simplest two-way systems have a single cone driver and a high-frequency driver, side by each. Some employ dual woofers, and those with a center high-frequency section that provides horizontal symmetry. Quasi-three-way solutions use dual woofers, but cross one over earlier, so the other is the single source of mid-range, eliminating cancellations. True three-way designs…

Once upon a time, most sound companies had a wood shop for building loudspeakers as well as road cases. These days, superior off-the-shelf loudspeakers employ high tech transducers. Indeed, some of the most advanced drivers are not for sale to the general public outside of the products that enclose them. Adamson Systems, JBL Professional and Meyer Sound have developed proprietary transducer technology that can only be owned though purchase of their loudspeaker systems, but we won’t be covering those products.…

Eminence Speaker LLC has introduced two new additions to its Neodymium Series of loudspeaker drivers - the Alphalite 6 CBMR and the Alphalite 6A. The Alphalite 6 CBMR is a 6.5-inch closed-back midrange driver with a new sealed 3.6-inch OD neodymium motor. Comprised of a new top plate, new back plate, new 3.6-inch OD neodymium magnet, and new core, this lightweight motor uses a very high temp grade of neodymium to prevent any heat related or power handling problems. “The…

The ongoing Coldplay Viva La Vida concert tour has all band members utilizing Sensaphonics custom earphones and Sennheiser wireless systems. Further, all four band members upgraded from the classic ProPhonic 2X-S to the Sensaphonics 2MAX. “Most of the backline crew also have Sensaphonics IEMs,” says Monitor Engineer Chris Wood. “We have found the drivers to be very reliable. I can’t recall having a problem in the eight years we have used them.” A few wedges can still be seen on…

This time in Real World Gear we look at the big guns - large format line arrays, those with 12-inch and larger woofers. Line arrays are modular, multi-way enclosures arrayed in vertical columns, with their cabinet’s geometry optimized to provide full-frequency transducer coupling from one enclosure to the next along the height of the array. This is achieved at lower frequencies with cone transducers forming a column from one cabinet to the next, at frequencies where the distance between their…

Britain’s Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the following years. The latest TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 earlier in 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC’s Studio 4, as part of this year’s Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival…
