At the ProLight+Sound 2013 show, Beyma introduced the 12MC500, a 12-inch cone woofer for 2- and 3-way loudspeakers, including line array modules. The new 12MC500 offers a 2.5-inch voice coil and a ferrite magnet, and assisted by Maltcross technology, Beyma’s new patent-pending cooling system, it handles up to 1,000 watts of program power and significantly reduces loss due to power compression effect. The primary application target of the 12MC500 is low and mid/low frequency program, and so it is designed…

Celestion will be unveiling new additions to its next-generation CF Series of high-end ferrite magnet drivers at the upcoming Winter NAMM show in Anaheim (booth 4676). The new 18-inch, cast aluminum frame, ferrite magnet, low-frequency drivers are well-suited to use in high-end, professional sound reinforcement. The CF1830E is designed to be a multi-purpose loudspeaker driver for reflex, scoop bass or horn-loaded subwoofers as well as a bass unit in a large multi-way system. The CF1830E hass a 3-inch/75mm multi-layer voice…

“Cause you are a magnet, and I am steel.” – Walter Egan Magnets play a vital role in hundreds of thousands of devices, ranging from small toys and disk drives, to washing machines, industrial motors, and of course, loudspeakers (and microphones). And chief among magnetic material is the rare-earth composite called neodymium. It’s more properly known as Nd–Fe-B, for indeed, what we casually call “neo” is really a processed alloy of three elements: neodymium, ferrite, and boron. Neo is highly…

Get more of the latest news from the 2012 PL+S show. Two new high-frequency drivers and a “bullet” driver are the two latest additions to the growing FaitalPRO line of loudspeaker drivers with ferrite magnet structures. They will on display at the 2012 Prolight+Sound/Musikmesse show later this week in Frankfurt. The new HF105 compression driver offers a 91 mm total diameter, a 37 mm voice coil, a Ketone Polymer ring diaphragm, and radial phase plug. Despite the use of…

(Editor’s Note: Eminence Speaker LLC contributed to this report.) Cone drivers (also referred to as woofers and transducers in this article) are not overly complex. When an electrical current passes through a wire coil (the voice coil) in a magnetic field, it produces a force that varies with the current applied. The cone, connected to the voice coil, moves in and out, creating waves of high and low air pressure. The coil and magnet assembly are the “motor structure” of…

The latest addition to the RCF line of 18-inch woofers - the LF18X401 - is now shipping. The new design incorporates a high-power ferrite magnet, ventilation, and very low power compression. The materials used in the ferrite magnet create a force factor very close to a typical neodymium circuit. The LF18X401 also features a fiber-loaded cone assembly along with a high-excursion triple roll, constant geometry surround. This combination provides a venting system with exceptional strength, insuring a very efficient voice…

At the upcoming Prolight + Sound show in Frankfurt, B&C Speakers will be unveiling two new additions to its high-performance SW Series of woofers with two new 15-inch models, the 15SW100 and 15SW115. The new 15SW100 is a 4-inch voice coil, 3,000-watt, neodymium motor woofer that includes B&C’s split winding voice coil technology, which dramatically reduces distortion and non-linearity. In addition, peak-to-peak excursion is 57mm, and other features include a ventilated voice coil gap for reduced power compression, and an…

The new FaitalPRO 4FE30, debuting at the 2011 Winter NAMM show (booth 6894), is a cone loudspeaker driver assigned to the full-range category. Like all other loudspeakers of the company’s Fe Series, it is intended to reproduce the greatest part of the audio range possible. Measurements have demonstrated that the new 4FE30 easily reproduces the range between 110 Hz and 20,000 Hz and is recognizable for a rather “flat” linear response without “gaps.” The nominal power specification is 30 watts.…

Before the modern era of packaged, off-the-shelf loudspeaker systems of virtually every type and size, most individuals and sound companies built their own enclosures, with cone and compression drivers (and often crossovers) acquired from specialized developers. Compression drivers were also a key component in “horn and driver” designs that, until about 15 years ago, were the most popular choice for public address systems in large-scale venues such as arenas and stadiums. Still, while times have changed, a plethora of developers…
