Telefunken Elektroakustik will be exhibiting four new direct boxes at Winter NAMM 2017, including mono and dual models of both active FET and passive designs. The Telefunken TDA-1 (mono) and TDA-2 (dual) are newly designed active FET direct boxes that employ discrete Class-A FET circuitry and passive transformers. In the heart of each new Telefunken direct box design are custom-wound output transformers by OEP/Carnhill, made in the UK. The circuit boards feature gold-plated traces for maximum conductivity and are hand-assembled… View this story

Radial Engineering announces that the 4-Play direct box, designed for artists who employ multiple instruments on stage, is now shipping. The 4-Play begins with a standard ¼-inch input for acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass or just about any instrument. A mute footswitch lets you silence the switcher when connecting or disconnecting the instrument. The signal is then routed to a selector footswitch that sequentially activates up to four outputs allowing each instrument to have its own dedicated channel on the… View this story

In its most basic form, a DI – also known as a direct box and short for “direct injection” and/or “direct insert” – takes an unbalanced high-impedance signal (i.e., from an electric guitar or keyboard) and converts it to a balanced low-impedance signal. This process is needed when running high-impedance signal at long distances, such as down a snake to a front of house console. Unconverted, the unbalanced signal can pick up noise; also, sending high-impedance signal at longer distances… View this story
