Jensen Transformers is now shipping four new ISO-MAX direct boxes for live stage, house of worship and multi-media applications, including the Concert-1 and Concert-2 for instruments and the Media-1 and Media-2 for laptops and other consumer audio sources. Concert-1 is a single-channel direct box with standard 1/4-inch input and throughput. Inside, a Jensen JT-DB-EPC transformer performs the balancing and lowers the impedance to ensure optimal signal transfer from the instrument to the PA’s mic input. A 1/8-inch (3.5mm) TRS connector… View this story

    PSW Staff 04/07/16 01:54 PM,
Radial Engineering has announced the Headlight-Pro, a unique direct box designed to handle multiple instruments on stage. The Headlight-Pro begins with a standard 1/4-inch input for acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle or bass. (It will also work well with many other instruments.)  A muting footswitch is provided to silence the switcher when connecting or disconnecting an instrument. The signal is then routed to a selector footswitch that sequences across four outputs allowing each instrument to have its own dedicated channel on… View this story

    Craig Leerman 04/05/16 12:28 PM,
The majority of live shows and events present interconnect challenges. We need to interface our gear with installed house systems, recording or broadcast trucks, A/V companies, rental gear, and even equipment from our own inventory that has different connectors. My company’s inventory, for example, consists of various analog and digital consoles, some of which have 1/4-inch TRS (tip/ring/sleeve) connectors for outputs, while others have XLR connectors and still others are outfitted with some combination of both. As a general rule,… View this story

    direct boxes
    Mark Frink 02/08/16 01:32 PM,
In audio there are inputs and outputs, sometimes called sources and destinations. Audio input sources break down into two basic types: microphones and direct inputs (DI), which also stands for “direct injection.” We commonly refer to the devices that perform this function as a direct box, a DI box, or a DI for short. The various kinds of microphones utilized in pro audio are acoustic-to-electric transducers that convert sound waves in the air into electrical signals. A DI, on the… View this story

    PSW Staff 01/25/16 03:21 PM,
Radial Engineering has introduced the DiNET DAN-TX and DiNET DAN-RX, both Dante-enabled direct boxes. The Di-NET DAN-TX stereo direct box is equipped with 1/4-inch, RCA and stereo 3.5mm input jacks, allows users to connect instruments or line level sources directly to networked audio systems using the Dante protocol. The DAN-TX has 24-bit/96 kHz analog to digital conversion, and a local 3.5mm headphone output provides the means to quickly test audio. The DiNET DAN-RX is a 24-bit/96 kHZ digital to analog… View this story

At NAMM 2016, dbx by Harman unveiled five new additions to the Di and CT line-up of products, including the new Di4, Di1 and DJdi direct injection boxes and CT3 and CT2 cable testing accessories. The Di4 four-channel direct box converts unbalanced signals into balanced output, and also can function as a multi-channel stereo line mixer. This allows users to connect keyboards, samplers and modules into one unit and supply independent XLR balanced outputs to the front of house engineer,… View this story

    Peter Janis 08/04/15 10:54 AM,
When amplifying an acoustic guitar, the use of a microphone can lead to concerns about feedback as well as being able to adequately amplify the instrument. With electric guitars, there are also concerns about the microphone adequately and accurately picking up the sound from the guitar amp, and in many cases, there’s also a desire for a quieter stage. Both scenarios lead to the use of direct (or DI) boxes as an alternative. But note that when selecting a direct… View this story

    Peter Janis 06/30/15 06:33 AM,
One of the most challenging tasks confronted by a sound engineer is amplifying orchestral instruments on a loud stage. Problems abound, including bleed, resonance, feedback… oh, and frustration! It’s important to first understand the environment before dealing with the challenges. When in a “classical” concert hall, orchestral instruments such as violin, cello or upright bass are usually miked with omnidirectional condenser microphones. Omnis are particularly effective at producing a natural sound as they do not focus their attention on a… View this story

    PSW Staff 02/12/15 11:40 AM,
Fishman has introduced the new Platinum Pro EQ and Platinum Stage acoustic preamps, designed to provide very accurate sonic detail with any acoustic instrument. Redesigned from the ground up, the all-analog Platinum Pro EQ and Platinum Stage incorporate discrete, high-headroom Class-A preamps using precision high-speed circuitry to enhance fidelity while lowering distortion. Classic Fishman tone centers with sweepable mid are combined with a switchable guitar/bass EQ mode, making Platinum preamps more musical for bass instruments and more universal for both… View this story
