After Michael Prowda made the decision to get into live sound he never looked back. “I had no expectations at the time,” he said. “I just wanted to do it. It was like I was driven to be successful.” Based on that comment, it’s no great surprise that the Syracuse, NY-born monitor engineer counts running among his favorite off stage activities. He brings the kind of discipline and perspective to his work that’s essential to anyone who takes pleasure from…

It’s hardly rare to hear the words “major motion picture event” applied to a summer film. Visually stunning or not, whether it’s the latest Hollywood biopic, all-star comedy or action adventure, the phrase is attached to big budget summer flicks so permanently and casually that we hardly take notice. In the case of director Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s environ-epic “Home”, however, that phrase actually rings true… Produced by Luc Besson and backed by PPR, a French holding company that specializes in some…

Mackie describes the HD1531 as a “15” High-Definition Powered Loudspeaker System”. Yep, it’s got a 15” woofer, and it’s a three-way system, and it’s powered. Now what’s all this about being “High Definition”? I suppose I could try to explain it, but it might be easier if you just go here (pdf) and get the Mackie explanation. The ordinary every-day non-HD attributes of this powered loudspeaker include 900 watts of power with an 1800 watt peak. Power is divided 700/100/100…

The Southern Baptist Convention, held in June at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, was served by a sound reinforcement system powered by 24 new Yamaha TX6n amplifiers The Yamaha amplifiers were purchased from Capital Design Group by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) late last year, in preparation for this year’s event. The SBC-owned audio inventory is vast and can support crowds of up to about 15,000 in a convention center/exhibit hall/theater configuration. “We chose the new…

The Minnetonka Performing Arts Center, located at Minnetonka (Minnesota) High School, has a new sound reinforcement system thanks to Electronic Design Company (EDC) of Shoreview, Minnesota. The center, a joint operation between the City of Minnetonka and the school district, recently underwent extensive remodeling, including a new sound system for the “Art Center on 7,” a 680-seat proscenium theater headed by NEXO GEO line arrays in a left-center-right (LCR) and subwoofer configuration. BAE (Brent Averill Enterprises) has introduced the new, improved 1272 and 1272A stereo mic preamplifiers, featuring a new twist on vintage design, with the hand-built units now housed in enclosed chassis. “The benefit of this new design is that it provides more real estate on which to place additional features,” commented BAE President, Mark Loughman. “The four buttons on the faceplate signify 48-volt phantom power, phase reverse, direct line input and selectable mic input impedance of 1200 and 300 ohms.”…
