One of the topics that I’ve seen poorly understood, and even deliberately used to mislead people, is the issue of wireless microphone transmitter power and the effects said power has on system performance. Let’s start with the basics: all things being equal, more transmitter power = more range for the system, but not in a linear way. In broad terms, when discussing analog wireless systems, the receiver wants to see a signal from a transmitter that is at least about…

The new Mackie Thump TH-15A is a two-way, self-powered portable loudspeaker. It incorporates a proprietary Class-D Fast Recovery amplifier that pushes 400-watts of power to the high-frequency 1-inch compression driver and 15-inch woofer. Proprietary Mackie Active processing (based on the company’s popular SRMv2 Series), including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment, provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. The TH-15A also features a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control, providing an available 15 dB boost or cut at 80 Hz…

A significant evolution of ADAM Audio’s S-Series, the new SX-Series reference monitors feature completely redesigned transducers, drivers and electronics to enable exceptionally transparent reproduction. All ADAM SX-Series monitors feature the new X-ART tweeter, which provides 4 dB higher efficiency, an increased maximum sound pressure level of 3 dB, and an expanded frequency response of up to 50 kHz. Other new components include an ultra-low distortion broadband A/B amplifier with 1 MHz internal bandwidth, perfectly matched to the X-ART tweeter for…

Mackie describes the HD1531 as a “15” High-Definition Powered Loudspeaker System”. Yep, it’s got a 15” woofer, and it’s a three-way system, and it’s powered. Now what’s all this about being “High Definition”? I suppose I could try to explain it, but it might be easier if you just go here (pdf) and get the Mackie explanation. The ordinary every-day non-HD attributes of this powered loudspeaker include 900 watts of power with an 1800 watt peak. Power is divided 700/100/100…

For a regional sound company, as in any growing business with significant hardware costs, equipment purchases can really affect cash flow and strain the budget. The challenge is to make smart choices and stay within a set budget without compromising quality - a course being navigated by Spider Ranch Productions Owner/Founder Alex Moran. With a office/warehouse in South San Francisco and another warehouse at the original Spider Ranch in Pescadero, CA, Moran has taken this once small regional sound company…

Heil Sound has introduced the PR 48 large diaphragm dynamic microphone, designed for kick drum use. The PR 48 features a 1.5-inch diameter element, and is mounted in a vulcanized double shock mount, which offers complete isolation within a rugged cast metal housing, which is designed with a slanted entrance to the 3-pin XLR so the cable assembly is easier to connect. A specially designed low pass filter sets the -3 dB hinge points at 30 Hz and 8kHz with…

The single rack-space Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 is part of the Saffire line of Firewire audio/MIDI interfaces that all feature innovative control, routing and, for the 40, latency-free direct monitoring. The Focusrite Saffire 40 stands out from other manufacturer’s units chiefly because of its superior analog front end, solid digital conversion system, unique feature set, and the unit’s seemingly endless universality. With its flexible analog and digital I/O capabilities it acts as the “nexus” of your DAW studio. This is…
