Given its exceptional faculty and its extensive facilities for Music and Music Recording Technology, the Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York is rare among community colleges. The campus is home to the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), a popular outdoor venue that seats 5,000, and a John Storyk-designed recording studio. Recently, the school committed to building a new Student Life Center building, which, among many other amenities, includes a 410-seat Performing Arts Center and a smaller…

Nationwide Arena is home to the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League and is host to most of the popular musical acts that travel through Ohio’s capital city. Depending on its configuration, Nationwide Arena can accommodate between 17,000 and 21,000 people. Unfortunately, since opening its doors in 2000, poor sound system coverage had been the arena’s little secret. Fortunately the owners were unwilling to rest on their laurels. Recently, as part of a project that included a massive…

The Florida Senate Chamber in Tallahassee, FL is a large, circular room, with desks for the 40 senators and lecterns for the senate president, the senate secretary, and invited speakers on the main floor. Visitor galleries surround the chamber. Within these physical parameters, Tallahassee-based A/V integration firm and instrument retailer Music Masters recently deployed a new 7.1 surround sound system headed by Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers in a flown ring, delivering natural and intelligible sound reinforcement for senate…

Known affectionately to the students at the University of Virginia as “Mem Gym,” Memorial Gymnasium was constructed in 1924 to provide a home for the school’s basketball team. The 2,500-seat facility currently serves as a workout center and home to the school’s volleyball, wrestling, and intramural sports teams. As part of its commitment to keeping the facility in tip-top shape, the school recently hired dB Audio & Video of Gainesville, Georgia to renovate Memorial Gymnasium’s sound reinforcement system. In order…

The parishioners at First Baptist Church of Goodlettsville, Tennessee are the first churchgoers to enjoy the fidelity, power, and clean, even coverage of a pair of Danley Sound Labs Jericho JH-90 full-range, point-source loudspeakers utilized in their new sanctuary sound system. Professional Audio Solutions, Inc. designed and installed the first-of-its-kind project under the leadership of Scott Oliver, director of contracting and engineering. Once Oliver included the costs of labor and amplifier channels, he discovered that purchasing and installing a stereo…

Danley Sound Labs will introduce the Jericho Horn at InfoComm 2010. The Jericho Horn is built upon the same three technologies that marked a new beginning for the industry in the Genesis Horn; Synergy Horn, Paraline, and the Shaded Amplitude Lens. It uses six 18-inch low-frequency drivers, six 6-inch mid-frequency drivers, and two 4-inch two-way high-frequency drivers, making it a four-way design. Users have the option of adding 20,000 Watts of self-power and/or user-adjustable DSP. The combination of the three…

Danley Sound Labs will announce the introduction of two new molded horn loudspeakers – the SM-60M and SM-60F – at InfoComm 2010. Both units feature Tom Danley’s synergy horn technology. The SM-60F delivers full-range content, whereas the SM-60M delivers mid- and high-frequency content only. The units are similar to Danley’s flagship SH-50 full-range loudspeaker, but use fewer drivers and are constructed of molded plastic, making the stock units completely weatherproof. “I am extremely pleased with the way the SM boxes…

Danley Sound Labs is introducing the new TH-118 subwoofer at the upcoming 2010 InfoComm show in Las Vegas. The unit joins Danley’s family of patent-pending tapped horn subwoofers, delivering uniquely flat, low, and powerful bass from relatively lightweight, compact enclosures. The TH-118 modifies Danley’s popular TH-115 subwoofer with an 18-inch driver that adds greater output. “The TH-118 kind of fell into my lap,” laughed inventor Tom Danley. “Eighteen Sound introduced a new 18-inch driver that is tremendously powerful. I looked…

Turner Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves, originally opened as the Centennial Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Following the games, it was converted to a baseball park, with was part of the plan all along, and the Braves moved in at the start of the 1997 season. A new stadium-wide sound reinforcement system for the 49,000-seat venue, implemented this past off-season, features a distributed approach, utilizing custom-built loudspeakers that would easily be installed in…

I have a keen interest in the history of live sound reinforcement, the gear that was used way back when, and the associated advancements of technology. I’m also very interested in new technology, even if the price tag of the cutting-edge stuff means the chances of me using it any time soon are a pipe dream. And, I also like to just hang out and talk shop with other sound guys. A recent event planned by some ProSoundWeb community members,…
