This article is provided by Lenard Audio.   This article is a basic overview of crossovers.  Next time we’ll take an in-depth look at passive crossovers, followed by active crossovers and then time alignment. Three octaves or 3.2 octaves (1 decade) is the optimum bandwidth for a speaker (a topic which we’ll touch on in a later article). The crossovers function is to decrease power at a given rate from either or both sides of a given bandwidth. The slopes… View this story

The new Mackie Thump TH-15A is a two-way, self-powered portable loudspeaker. It incorporates a proprietary Class-D Fast Recovery amplifier that pushes 400-watts of power to the high-frequency 1-inch compression driver and 15-inch woofer. Proprietary Mackie Active processing (based on the company’s popular SRMv2 Series), including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment, provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. The TH-15A also features a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control, providing an available 15 dB boost or cut at 80 Hz… View this story

The new Biema MAX 10 loudspeaker combines the advantages of wide frequency response and dynamic range with low harmonic distortion and high fidelity. The MAX 10 high-frequency component employs a BMS driver made in Germany, while the rotatable horn provides 50-degree by 80-degree coverage. The 10-inch woofer is mounted in a vented enclosure tuned for optimized low frequency response.  An internal passive filter network provides all acoustical crossover and equalization. Inputs and outputs are Neutrik Type NL4,  wired in parallel.… View this story

In a move that immediately extends its sound reinforcement capabilities, Florida-based systems integration firm Multi Image Group (MIG) has purchased 110 Crown Audio I-Tech HD amplifiers.  MIG, which specializes in corporate A/V projects for clients such as CitiGroup, Deutsche Bank, and Proctor and Gamble, upgraded its entire amplifier inventory from the original I-Tech amplifiers.  “MIG was not using Crown amplifiers when I joined the company. I didn’t agree with this because I had been using Crown since I started in… View this story

Sound Designer Jason Barnes chose the new Duran Audio AXYS ScopeG2 loudspeaker range as the FOH PA for the ongoing U.K. tour of the classic rock opera “Quadrophenia” “I chose AXYS over alternatives because of their dynamic sound, energy and ability to deal with the full range of frequencies whilst not sounding over processed,” Barnes explains. “I wanted to take the risk and try something new and powerful that had never been used in theatre before to create a more… View this story

Electro-Voice has introduced the EVA (Expandable Vertical Array) series of loudspeakers for installed sound, a debut that came at 2009 InfoComm in Orlando. Part of the EV-Innovation (EV-I) family, EVA offers the benefits of concert line arrays in a new, simpler format. EVA modules can quickly and easily be assembled into full-bandwidth line arrays with well-defined coverage, without the rigging and drive complexities of conventional concert line array products. EVA is a modular system, with four two-way models available to… View this story

KRK Systems is now shipping the R6 passive studio monitor, which incorporates design cues from KRK’s popular Rokit line, including radically radiused edges along the front of the cabinet. The R6, like its Rokit brethren, provides a sleeker, more modern look, including a molded front baffle also engineered to minimize diffraction of high-frequencies, resulting in a sweet spot that is significantly larger than products with square or lightly rounded baffles. The baffle also houses a molded front-facing bass port that… View this story

Meyer Sound has introduced the JM-1P arrayable loudspeaker, a self-powered high-Q system designed to integrate seamlessly in tight-packed clusters where horizontal coverage must be predictably scaled to exacting requirements. Distinguished by its precisely defined 20-degree horizontal by 60-degree vertical pattern, the JM-1P delivers controlled coverage while minimizing reverberation in large or reflective acoustical environments. With a consistent polar response and trapezoidal enclosure patented by Meyer Sound, the JM-1P delivers optimum performance in tight-packed arrays providing horizontal coverage that is proportional… View this story
