A few years ago, I was given tickets to a concert at the local arena. It was a co-headlining show where one act played, then the other, ending with both acts playing together. Being the supreme el cheapo, I eagerly accepted the tickets and acted like Romeo when informing my wife that I was taking her out. We arrived early and naturally I took stock of the audio setup. Each act had its own reinforcement system complete with separate FOH,…

Aviom has expanded its Applications & Technical Training Program to include multiple interactive webcast sessions each month. Since the beginning of this year, the company has been hosting five or more of these sessions per month. The new expanded initiative features two training programs: one set of sessions designed for contractors, consultants, and other audio professionals and a second set designed specifically for end users. The training seminars cover everything from monitor mixing to getting started with digital snakes to…

Hope Community Church began worship services in 1994 with about 30 people in attendance. Less than 12 years later, the Raleigh, North Carolina interdenominational church celebrated the grand opening of a new worship campus that accommodates an average of more than 3,500 congregants every Sunday. In addition to a 1,500-seat worship sanctuary, it offers a chapel, café, numerous classrooms, youth rooms and more, each with discrete audio systems (and, in many cases, video/lighting systems as well). The theater-style worship sanctuary…

My DAW desktop surface is more crowded than ever—-and I’m loving it! I just added the new Novation Nocturn Plug-in Controller to my small army of DAW accessories. As DAW plug-ins become more complex and intense, their GUIs (graphical user interface) have become more jam packed with more parameter controls than ever! And in order to keep their GUI’s screen size to a minimum, the controls and buttons keep getting smaller and smaller. Even though I get new glasses often,…

For the past two years, AVS Production Group (formerly known as Abe V Systems) has deployed JBL Professional VERTEC line arrays powered by Crown Audio I-Tech power amplifiers at New York City’s dynamic Terminal 5 live music venue. Eric Winbush built his professional audio and video studio from the ground up. “I’m an expert in hanging sheetrock, electrical wiring and plumbing,” he said. “I can build a house now.” But his real specialty is recognizing and mentoring talent. Dadd’s Production, as the studio is known, is a busy place that works with a stable of in-house talent. Winbush also volunteers his talents to students at the Savannah Arts Academy, who receive hands-on training with professional grade audio-visual equipment.…

Several top drummers are integrating Geoffrey Daking & Co. microphone preamps, equalizers and compressors into their recording setups, including, most recently, Dave Weckl, as well as manufacturer Drum Workshop and Billy Ward. Jazz-fusion drummer Weckl equipped his Los Angeles studio with thirteen channels of Daking mic preamps and a pair of compressors. “I have five Mic Pre/EQs, for kick, two snares and overheads, and two Mic Pre IVs for toms, room and anything else I record. I also have two…

On the upcoming Steve Miller Band concert tour, slated to kick off in May, the band’s monitor engineer, Ira Malek, will be utilizing a Yamaha PM5D digital console. With most of his mix years spent at front of house, Malek began using a Yamaha PM5D when it first became available for a Good Charlotte show in New York’s MTV Studio. “There is always something new to learn on the PM5D, and when I find a new function or technique, I…

After three months in North America, Metallica’s Death Magnetic tour has rolled into Europe with front of house engineer Big Mick Hughes at the helm of his Midas XL8 live performance system, creating what he describes as “the best sound it’s been, ever. The XL8 has been absolutely flawless, it hasn’t missed a beat once.” It’s been 18 months since Mick first took the XL8 out on European summer dates with Metallica. “You use analog for so long you get…
