Each year, West Hollywood’s world-famous Sunset Strip celebrates its rich musical history and influence with the Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF), a three-day event featuring dozens of bands performing at Key Club, The Roxy Theatre, Whisky A Go-Go, Viper Room, and House of Blues. But the biggest draw, by far, is the festival’s third day when the city closes off the four blocks between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard and a number of top-name acts converge to rock two… View this story

Those of us who indulge in live sound spend countless hours paying attention to every detail in the audio signal chain - comparing, pondering opinionating and deciding every issue that crosses our path. Does this mixing console sound better? Do I need to spend an extra $2,000 on a vocal compressor? Can you please move the guitar mic two millimeters to the left? Does phantom power really ruin ribbon mics? One question persists, however: to what end is all this… View this story

Perhaps the most exciting type of recording comes in the live realm, whether it be in a club or concert hall or stadium. Many musicians and bands want to record live because they feel that’s when they play best. The goal, then, is to capture the performance so it can be brought back alive. Remote recording is exhilarating. The musicians - excited by the audience - often put on a stellar performance. Usually you only get one chance to get… View this story

With inflation spiraling ever upwards, not many groups can afford to tour extensively, and fill the large arena so popular a few years back. Bruce Springsteen is one of those superstars who can sell out 16,000-plus seat venues for four nights in L.A.,and still turn many thousands more away. Springsteen’s music is hard to reproduce live, especially at an in-the-round venue such as the Los Angeles Sports Arena. He layers his instruments, but many overlap into the same areas. On… View this story
