Chuck McGregor 12/02/10 03:00 PM, 0 CommentsAlthough this is not a rigorous treatment of the subject, the following are general guidelines that may be helpful in setting the gain structure for an audio system and making final adjustments to it for best results. A Basic Procedure As a minimum, you need to use at least a voltmeter along with the maximum output voltage specification for each piece of electronics. The preferable tool is an oscilloscope that can be used to observe the signal directly. If neither… View this story

Chuck McGregor 08/24/10 11:19 AM, 0 CommentsClipping means that the tops of the signal are “clipped off” or “flat-topped” when the signal level is exceeding the maximum capability of the power amplifier or some other piece of equipment in the system. During the times when a signal is flat-topped, loudspeaker cones are not being “instructed” to move as it is receiving essentially a DC signal. This means all power goes into heating up their voice coils instead of producing sound. In other words, during the times… View this story

James Cadwallader 02/25/09 12:44 PM,It’s time for me to come out of the closet: I’m a dyed-in-the-wool unity gain structure freak. There, I said it and I sure do feel better. Catharsis is a good thing. Now, for those of you who aren’t sure what the heck I’m talking about, I’ll explain, and maybe get a few of you over to the dark side with me. First some clarification. Gain in sound parlance is the act of adding to (positive), subtracting from (negative), or… View this story
