For a brief moment in time, I, the lowly sound guy, had enormous power! Our story begins late one Friday afternoon when I received a call from Andy, the technical director at the Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University in Lansing, Mi. He wanted to know if I could be front-of house mix engineer for an upcoming event the following week. Sure, I said, searching my calendar, half-listening as he described the event. Then, whoa,…

In an audio system redesign that marks the complete transformation of a former cinema to a house of worship, the Faith Evangelical Free Church of Waterville, Maine is now equipped with a pair of JBL Professional CBT (Constant Bandwidth Technology) 70J column loudspeakers, each with three CBT 70JE extender cabinets. After Faith Evangelical moved into the cinema space seven years ago, it was served only by a low-quality public address system. A deeply curved wall behind the stage dampened the…

An Aviom Pro16 digital snake is a major component of the audio install in the new 4,000-seat Trianon Auditorium at Church Team Ministries International (CTMI) complex in Mauritius. Installed by South Africa’s Northwind Recording, the extensive Aviom system delivers audio to various locations throughout the church campus, which is one of the largest gathering places in the country. The auditorium was built to meet the growing demands of CTMI, which hosts services every Sunday in addition to a yearly international…

When faced with a need for either a significant improvement to an existing sound system or an entirely new sound system, the most often-heard advise is “hire a qualified consultant.” Or at least it should be. But many churches balk at the notion of paying a fee to a professional to help with sound system needs. The thinking: this is not money well spent because there always seems to be “someone” in the congregation confident in his own abilities to…

Built about 100 years ago, St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Angel, one of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, offers magnificent architecture that creates a challenging acoustical environment. “As with most cathedral-type spaces, the acoustics are wonderful for choir and pipe organ, but spoken-word intelligibility is problematic throughout most of the nave,“says Steve Jellerson of Delta AV. “It’s a beautiful space but an extreme challenge, acoustically speaking. They’ve tried a number of loudspeaker systems over…

So what is happening when we put a sound system in a church or in any enclosed room? Why is the sound sometimes clear in one part of the church but only a few seats away we can hardly hear anything at all while another few seats down it is very loud, or if we hear we cannot understand what is being said? Why is it when the speakers were brought in and demonstrated on stands they sounded great on…

It takes the right blend of quality ingredients and salient directions to produce the best results from any recipe. If a dessert recipe calls for cream, it’s not essential to use Alpine milk from hand-milked Bavarian cows, but using skim milk instead of cream may jeopardize the final results. The same holds true for sound reinforcement. A microphone for a singing vocalist that’s substituted with a pulpit microphone designed for spoken word simply isn’t the right ingredient for the recipe.…

A good house sound reinforcement system starts with a controlled stage monitor system, and a controlled monitor system starts with managing the on-stage levels. Simply, excessive sound pressure levels (SPL) on stage can often lead to excessive levels from the house system. This leads to two suggestions. Monitor levels should be set after house levels, and monitor levels should be sufficiently low in order to not interfere with the house system. Let’s proceed with the assumption that the goal of…

The newly opened Kroc Center (also known as the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center) is one of thirty-one planned community centers now built or proposed for construction across the United States. Operated by The Salvation Army and funded by a $1.5 billion donation from the estate of the late Joan Kroc (widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc), the Kroc Center is a community center where children and families are to be exposed to different people, activities, and arts that…

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: I’ve been helping out with sound at church for a while now, so I feel kind of silly asking this question. However, I see the abbreviations “TS” and “TRS” on lots of things with 1/4” jacks and plugs. What do all these different abbreviations mean? A: Not a silly question at all! Deciphering all the jargon and abbreviations associated with pro audio can indeed be a challenging task. “TS” stands for “tip-sleeve,” a type of…
