With songs by rocker girl Cyndi Lauper and story by celebrated actor/playwright, Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots has Broadway on its feet. Based on the 2005 British flick about a struggling shoe factory that reinvigorates business by making fetish footwear for drag queens, the show opened to rave reviews—and a Tony Award nomination on the horizon. Sound designer John Shivers opted for a DiGiCo SD7T to handle the production after becoming familiar with the system on his previous productions for Bonnie…

When Broadway’s newest musical, Kinky Boots, strutted into the Hirschfeld Theatre earlier this month, it earned rave reviews from preview audiences. To bring the show’s music-and-dance-filled score to life for audiences, Sound Designer John Shivers, along with his long-time associate and collaborator, David Patridge, turned to Masque Sound for a custom audio equipment package. Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price, an aspiring young businessman forced to give up his dreams…

Once, Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Best New Musical, relies on DPA Microphones’ 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones to provide a transparent sound in a small, discreet capsule. Based on the 2007 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Once takes place on a set designed to give audience members the illusion that they are watching a true event unfold, making them feel as though they are right on stage with the actors. The natural sounding DPA 4060s add to this impression. With…

Aviom’s Pro16 personal mixing system is helping musicians stay on point for Paris’ newest show “Zorro the Musical” currently being staged at the city’s famous Folies Bergere Theater. “Zorro” marries the tale of the legendary Spanish masked hero with the music of the Gypsy Kings. The show’s orchestration places instruments in three separate locations in the theater: guitars are situated on one platform, keyboards and miscellaneous percussion on another, and a full drum kit on a third. To make this…

Come Fly Away, the new musical that brings together the legendary music of Frank Sinatra and the creative vision of Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp, is now on Broadway. This exciting show combines the seductive vocals of Frank Sinatra with the sound of a live 19-piece big band and the thrill of Twyla Tharp’s choreography. A recent trip to Broadway in the Big Apple took me to five of the season’s top shows to see what equipment is used when the stakes are high. Literally million dollar shows, successful musicals often gross over a million dollars a week. Next February’s off-again, on-again Spiderman, sees songwriter U2’s start-up costs estimated at around $40 million. Broadway sound designs must provide clear, crisp, detailed sound to every seat in the house for patrons who pay average prices approaching…
