Meyer Sound has announced the company’s first live webinars on AVB (audio video bridging), the non-proprietary IEEE AV networking standards built upon the ubiquitous Ethernet protocols. The newest addition to the Meyer Sound worldwide education program, these webinars will be led by John McMahon, executive director, digital products. In these online sessions, McMahon will give a beginner’s introduction to the AVB standards, show how AVB can simplify AV network design and implementation, and explain the role of the AVnu Alliance…

Reidel Communications has premiered a suite of AVB products for the Artist digital matrix intercom platform. AVB allows for transporting AES3/EBU audio in real-time with guaranteed bandwidth and quality of service (QoS) via Ethernet-based Local Area Networks (LAN). The new products were unveiled at the recent Prolight+Sound 2012 show in Frankfurt. Based on official IEEE next generation Ethernet standards like 802.1Qav, P802.1Qat and P802.1AS, AVB allows risk-free utilization of AVB compliant facility or enterprise LAN infrastructure for intercom applications. This…

AVnu Alliance has named the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), an independent networking and data communications testing provider, as the first test house for the AVnu Alliance certification program of AVB devices. This agreement is a significant step forward in advancing the IEEE 802.1 AVB standards and bringing certified AVB networking products to the market. AVnu Alliance has also announced the timeline for the AVnu certification program. Starting August 2012, alliance members can submit AVB-enabled bridges to UNH-IOL…

An AES standards task group chaired by Kevin Gross is currently developing an interoperability standard for audio networking. The focus of the project, which is called “X192,” is addressing the need for interoperability between products of many different manufacturers. Once implemented, X192 will provide manufacturers with the means to remain with the network technology they are invested in, while also seamlessly interfacing with products that support other networks. There are currently a number of existing and work-in-progress protocols, each with…

The professional audio industry in 2011 has been abuzz yet again with a recurring theme that I like to refer to as the “can’t we all just get along?” conversation. As in years past, the topic of unifying standards between different manufacturers’ equipment to make exchange of information easier and more seamless was everywhere. This has been going on for some time, and has lived under different names and terms: “interconnectivity,” “convergence,” and the most recent model, “interoperability.” However, this…

In the world of networked audio transport, there are two major categories in which a system may fall: a fully standards-based network, or a proprietary network that may or may not use standards-based transport. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and, of course, are subject in varying degrees to the problems associated with transforming an analog signal into a digital stream and then back again. Let’s first explore the biggest question that a system designer should ask when someone shows…

BSS Audio announced that the GS724T 24-Port Ethernet AVB Switch is now shipping. The BSS Audio GS724T is co-branded with NETGEAR and represents the world’s first AVB (IEEE Audio Video Bridge) switch for networking multichannel audio and video over standardized Ethernet. HiQnet System Architect 3.0, launched at InfoComm 2011, includes the ability to add representations of the BSS Audio GS724T to the system design and add them to equipment racks if required. By specifying IP addresses for the GS724T devices…

At the 2011 InfoComm show in Orlando, Audinate has announced the introduction of Dante Netspander, which allows scalable digital A/V networks to be built without current constraints. Dante Netspander makes it possible to deliver tightly synchronized networked audio across subnets in a Layer 3 TCP/IP routed network. In addition, it uses Dante’s zero configuration networking capabilities to enable devices in a routed network to be discovered and easily managed. Dante Netspander will be made available as a powerful software application…

Meyer Sound will be hosting live presentations of the Constellation acoustic system, D-Mitri digital audio platform, and recently introduced loudspeakers including the JM-1P and MINA line array at the upcoming 2011 InfoComm show in Orlando. The Meyer Sound demo room (W203A) is the place to evaluate the compact MINA line array loudspeaker, along with the JM-1P arrayable loudspeaker that provides control of horizontal coverage in stand-alone or arrayed configurations. These demonstrations will also include the D-Mitri digital audio platform, which…
