Touring in support of their most recent album, Accelerate, R.E.M. selected Oxnard, California-based Rat Sound to handle sound reinforcement requirements, with Brett Eliason serving as FOH engineer and George Squiers handling monitor mix honors. Clair Brothers sublet two Midas XL8 digital mixing consoles (for house and monitors) to Rat Sound for the tour. “We pushed for the Midas consoles,” Eliason notes, adding, “Having the Midas preamps at the front end and a true 24-bit, 96 kHz digital resolution were the…

A report this week in the Puget Sound Business Journal notes that Loud Technologies (Mackie, EAW, Martin Audio, TAPCO and several other pro audio brands) “said its key Chinese supplier, which makes about a third of the company’s audio and musical products, has stopped making its products.” The supplier is experiencing financial difficulties. The report states that the “products it (the supplier) made represented 35 percent of Loud’s net sales in 2007 and 32 percent for the first six months…

Fort Wayne, IN-based Attero Tech has introduced its Outside-the-Box Series, four distinct products that make installing sophisticated CobraNet digital audio networks easy, accessible, and affordable. The InBox, OutBox, MatchBox and VoiceBox give audio-system designers a simple way to place the mainstay components of most sound-system installations, and eliminate the logistical issues and time-consuming work of running analog-audio cables throughout an application. Each Box is a fully-capable, true-CobraNet component: just one CAT5 Ethernet cable connects to every speaker, mixing console, audio…

If we were to conduct a poll regarding audio recording among churches, I think we would find that a large percentage of churches record their services. The reasons vary: some churches may simply want to archive their weekly sermons, while others may make available recorded copies of their services on CD, tape, or some other recordable medium. Certain things in “Americana” are indelibly classic: Coca-Cola, the ’57 Chevy, John Wayne, Route 66, Drive-In Movies, and the Golden Gate Bridge. And, it can be persuasively argued, Shure also belongs on that list. The company’s history exemplifies the much-documented American success story we never get tired of hearing: one person with a dream, overcoming considerable odds with little more than courage and moxie to create a thriving empire that’s touched many of our lives through the decades. Fortunately, like…
