Directional subwoofers are one more tool that can be used by sound system designers in their quest to achieve consistent sound throughout the intended listening area. When using traditional, more or less omni-directional bass reflex (a.k.a., “vented,” “ported,” or “front-loaded”) subs arranged left and right of a stage, there is a build-up or “power alley” created in the center, where the energy from each source location shows up at the same time, with no phase difference, and sums quite nicely.…

We often describe bass as non-directional. This is because we’ve learned that loudspeakers much smaller than the wavelengths they’re radiating are normally non-directional, and we know that bass wavelengths are long - 20 feet at 55 Hz, for example. In reality, bass is just low-frequency sound that obeys the same rules as sounds of other frequencies. In these rules, all dimensions are proportional to wavelength. For bass, practical directivity issues arise because the wavelengths involved are so large. Some…

Renkus-Heinz will host two seminars at the 2010 PLASA show in London about digitally steerable loudspeaker technology and its implementation in Renkus-Heinz’s Iconyx and IC Live column arrays. Rik Kirby, Renkus-Heinz VP sales & marketing, will present the sessions in the Whitehall Room in Earls Court 2, on Tuesday, September 14 from 5 pm - 6 pm, and on Wednesday, September 15, from 1 pm - 2 pm. Specifically, Kirby will discuss the technology’s concepts and benefits in detail and…

Of all the tweaking I apply as a system tech, the most common is fixing mediocre subwoofer setups. Problems in this area are so prevalent that many of us take them for granted or assume there is no room for improvement. In fact, most of the time there is a better solution. Further, that method is usually free and can be accommodated by most system layouts. Let’s use visual depictions of subwoofer response in a free field (i.e., outdoors) to…

As with all sizes of modular line array enclosures there are several designs in the “mini” genre, which we define as those with 7-inch “woofers”. The simplest two-way systems have a single cone driver and a high-frequency driver, side by each. Some employ dual woofers, and those with a center high-frequency section that provides horizontal symmetry. Quasi-three-way solutions use dual woofers, but cross one over earlier, so the other is the single source of mid-range, eliminating cancellations. True three-way designs…

This time in Real World Gear we look at the big guns - large format line arrays, those with 12-inch and larger woofers. Line arrays are modular, multi-way enclosures arrayed in vertical columns, with their cabinet’s geometry optimized to provide full-frequency transducer coupling from one enclosure to the next along the height of the array. This is achieved at lower frequencies with cone transducers forming a column from one cabinet to the next, at frequencies where the distance between their…

The 2009 No Doubt Summer Tour, which culminated in August with a show at the Neal S. Blaisdel Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, was supported by sound reinforcement courtesy of Sound Image of Escondido, California, which provided JBL VERTEC line arrays. The 2009 No Doubt Summer Tour reunited one of the most successful rock groups of the 1990s, whose 1995 release Tragic Kingdom has sold more than 16 million copies to date. In recent years, No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani…

The Christian Life Assembly (CLA) Church in Langley, British Columbia is a tech-savvy multi-campus congregation that offers both media streaming and podcast downloads of its services from its website. When the church began an extensive upgrade of its facilities last year, a new sound reinforcement system for its 1,500-seat sanctuary was high on its list of priorities. The new system is headed by three EAW KF730 compact line arrays, SB730 compact line array subwoofers and SB1000z large-format subwoofers supporting program…

The Southern Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, BC (Canada), recently hosted a live performance by legendary comic Bill Cosby on a Friday night and a high-energy rock concert called “Hot Summer Nights” the following Saturday, with both performances handled by the same sound reinforcement system headed by Martin Audio line arrays, loudspeakers, monitors, amplifiers and processors. Local audio provider Northwest Global Entertainment of Kelowna, BC, was confident in the capabilities of the system to provide premium audio quality for the…
