The annual July 4th concert performance at the Ft. Wayne campus of Indiana/Purdue University featured four local acts capped off by nationally known country singer Jo Dee Messina and a spectacular finale featuring the Ft. Wayne Symphony Orchestra performing in tandem with choreographed fireworks. To accommodate all of the performers, Sticha Bros, who’d been contracted for the event by Northern Productions of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, set up a larger 60- x 60-foot stage next to a smaller 60- x…

Mackie describes the HD1531 as a “15” High-Definition Powered Loudspeaker System”. Yep, it’s got a 15” woofer, and it’s a three-way system, and it’s powered. Now what’s all this about being “High Definition”? I suppose I could try to explain it, but it might be easier if you just go here (pdf) and get the Mackie explanation. The ordinary every-day non-HD attributes of this powered loudspeaker include 900 watts of power with an 1800 watt peak. Power is divided 700/100/100…

For a regional sound company, as in any growing business with significant hardware costs, equipment purchases can really affect cash flow and strain the budget. The challenge is to make smart choices and stay within a set budget without compromising quality - a course being navigated by Spider Ranch Productions Owner/Founder Alex Moran. With a office/warehouse in South San Francisco and another warehouse at the original Spider Ranch in Pescadero, CA, Moran has taken this once small regional sound company…

The new Professional Wireless Systems DB Series filtered receive multi-coupler is designed to function as the backbone of a broad range of wireless antenna distribution system functions, including broadcast, live sports, permanent install and corporate. “After years of modifying other products to function effectively in diverse RF applications, our R&D team took a fresh look at the multi-coupler issue,” says PWS General Manager Carl Cordes. “The DB-16 was developed to meet the real-world needs of today’s hyper-congested RF world.” Brand-agnostic…

The Southern Baptist Convention, held in June at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, was served by a sound reinforcement system powered by 24 new Yamaha TX6n amplifiers The Yamaha amplifiers were purchased from Capital Design Group by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) late last year, in preparation for this year’s event. The SBC-owned audio inventory is vast and can support crowds of up to about 15,000 in a convention center/exhibit hall/theater configuration. “We chose the new…

I’ve just fielded a call from someone in direct contact with the sound team regarding the alleged “sound system failure” last night on the Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour during its stop in Sturgis, South Dakota, where a series of events led to Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler injured and transported to a hospital after falling off the stage. The Associated Press wire report on the incident - picked up by news outlets around the country - begins: “Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler…

The planning and construction of Northwood Baptist Church’s new worship center in North Charleston, South Carolina, took nearly four years – and the church couldn’t be happier. “It took a little longer than we had originally hoped, but the patience paid off,” admits worship pastor Michael Bell. “But by taking the time to get it right, we got way more than we ever thought we could have. Our new Allen & Heath iLive-T console is a perfect example.” Design-build integrator…

Scott Shear’s Eccentric Studio in Ravena, New York, situated in the Catskills, is a multipurpose venue that hosts live performances, showcases, recording sessions, and rehearsals. Shear, a guitar player, originally started with the idea of building a place where he and his friends could play music and not necessarily be in a bar setting as well as provide a place to help support the music community with workshops and music camps. He did the majority of the construction of the…

Patriot Place, with the help of Warwick, Rhode Island-based Ambient Sound, recently specified a new Electro-Voice sound system for “Rock the Plaza” events at the 1.3 million square-foot shopping, dining, and event destination adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, home of the NFL’s New England Patriots. The new system has provided a significant upgrade to the popular “Rock the Plaza” outdoor concert series, a weekly showcase for local musicians that runs from April to October each year. Prior to…

The extensive sound reinforcement system serving the new Lancaster County Convention Center (LCCC) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania features network-ready Ashly Audio NE8250 power amplifiers. Interestingly, these amplifiers didn’t exist at the outset of the original system design for this long-delayed building project. “Now that it’s all finished, the preservation of the famous façade is a wonderful aspect of the center, and well worth the hassle during construction,” said Mark Showers, system specialist at Sage Technology Solutions in nearby Mount Joy. Sage…
