Most modern power amplifier designs have abandoned traditional “linear” power transformer-based supplies in favor of digital switching supplies, shedding about half their weight in the process, getting into the range of 10 kilos or 22 pounds. Nearly all amps are two “rack spaces” high for a total of 3.5 inches in a standard 19-inch wide equipment rack, with depths ranging from roughly 10 to 20 inches. Various circuit designs have emerged over the years. Class AB designs provide low distortion…

Until fairly recently, the audio power amplifier was almost as synonymous for excessive heat and weight as for its primary application. This reputation was the result of early inefficient output stages. Early designs dissipated most of the power drawn from the wall as heat, which then had to be sucked away from internal electronics with large metal heat sinks. Amplifiers have never enjoyed a reputation for being particularly sexy, being largely black boxes sporting a couple of big rotary dials…

Crown Audio has announced that it is extending its industry leading warranty on I-Tech HD Series, CTs Series and Macro-Tech i Series amplifiers from three years to five years, effective May 1, 2011. The new 5-year warranty applies to Crown I-Tech HD Series, CTs Series and Macro-Tech i Series amplifiers purchased on or after May 1, 2011. The “no-fault” warranty covers repairs that may occur during normal usage as well as from accidental damage. The warranty is transferrable from the…

Do I really need an AC (alternating current) power conditioner or regulator? Isn’t my surge protector enough? Two of the most commonly asked questions regarding power, for sure. Answers, in part, come from an understanding of modern-day realities. AC power is far noisier and contaminated than at any time since its inception. This is due not only to an increased population taxing utility lines, but also because of the proliferation of computers and microprocessors. These devices typically run on switching…

Because the impedance of a loudspeaker is a frequency-dependent parameter, it must be measured at multiple frequencies to get a true picture of what the amplifier is “seeing” at its output terminals. While very sophisticated methods and instruments exist, you can get a pretty good idea about the impedance curve of a loudspeaker with a standard real-time analyzer. You will need a pink noise generator and voltage source of at least 10 volts RMS to drive the loudspeaker. A small…

The digital revolution roars ahead at a mind-boggling pace. Ten years ago, few of us would have imagined that, by 2011, comprehensive power amplifier monitoring and control would be so easy, robust, portable, and almost ridiculously inexpensive. We sought to extend this capability even further, leveraging the recent developments in mobile device technology to create a new iOS native app called Powered by Crown. It allows the operator of networked Crown amplifiers to control settings and monitor performance from anywhere…

Gerald Stanley, senior vice president of research and development at Crown Audio, is celebrating 45 years of service with the company. One of the leading authorities in amplifier design in the professional audio industry, Stanley is responsible for 42 patents during his tenure with Crown. Stanley joined Crown part-time in 1964 while still an undergraduate at Michigan State University and served as a tape recorder line technician, draftsman, and amplifier design engineer. In 1966, he returned after completing a graduate…

This calculator provides line loss with 2-conductor cable on a constant voltage line.
Equation used to calculate the data:
Ploss = 10 * Log [1 - ((2 * RL) / (2 * RL + (Vline squared / Prated))]
RL = (Rref / 1000) * D
Where:
D = length of wire used
Ploss = ower loss in dB
Prated = power driven on line
RL = wire guage resistance
Vline = voltage on line

Here is a way to increase the actual power delivered to your loudspeakers by 5 percent to 15 percent just by doing a simple wiring change. First, a bit about power amplifiers. Look at the typical power amp as a device that has two reservoirs of energy - one positive, one negative. The audio signal sent to the amp acts as a control to release the energy from the reservoirs to the output. But the problem is that when an…

Few subjects generate more confusion in the audio world than power. There is a very good reason for this - it’s a confusing subject, and one that can easily fool our intuition. Most of us are on a power trip - our attitude is that “more is better.” We want bigger amplifiers and more “powerful” loudspeakers so that our sound systems will be louder. In fact, power ratings are often the main (or only) criteria considered regarding amplifiers and loudspeakers…
