What goes around comes around. From the 1920s through the 1940s, PA systems for music often used only a single microphone. Band members would gather closely around this mic, balancing their sound by moving toward or away from the mic. Radio broadcasts and recordings often used one mic as well. This “old fashioned” technique has made a comeback; for example, many bluegrass and folk bands utilize the one-mic method with surprisingly good result, typically using a large diaphragm cardioid condenser.…

Will Allen Airshows present a series of breath-taking loops, hammerheads, spins, stalls, and other aerial maneuvers - all while Allen, known as the “Flying Tenor”, sings the national anthem of the United States and, occasionally, the anthem of Canadian live from the cockpit of his Decathlon (a two-seat fixed conventional gear light airplane). The aerobatic routine has been choreographed to harmonize with the cadence and crescendos of the anthems as Allen performs solo, with keyboard accompaniment emanating from terra firma.…

There is some misinformation floating about regarding the benefits and detriments of line array and point source loudspeaker technology. The industry seems to be split down the middle with dogmatic “traditionalists” on one side, “new-fangled” line source users on the other, with seemingly fewer of us who just use whichever is most applicable and don’t worry about it. Neither technology needs defending, neither technology is inherently superior at all tasks, and to be honest, there isn’t that much difference at…

The mistakes worship teams commit while approaching God do not preclude His presence, but they do erect obstacles to the flow of the Holy Spirit. Here, then, are 10 common errors churches can avoid in the pursuit of God: 1. Turning minor errors into public spectacles. When a vocalist forgets to turn on a wireless microphone or a technician commits a track cueing error, the worst thing a worship leader can do is to proclaim the mistake to the entire…

Britain’s Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the following years. The latest TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 earlier in 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC’s Studio 4, as part of this year’s Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival…

Question: Everyone knows that adding people to a room changes everything, so does anyone have any tricks on simulating or accounting for the audience when doing soundcheck? I’m just curious to see what can be done. Reply by Per: That’s an interesting thought that has followed me for years. I guess it would be possible to build a virtual audience for soundcheck purposes. Since acoustic absorbers are a combination of material and air, maybe they could be constructed so that…

Euphonix has announce that the global Euphonix client base is continuing to install additional broadcast consoles or make major upgrades to their existing studios. In Japan public broadcaster, NHK, installed two more Euphonix digital audio mixing systems bringing the count to seven Euphonix consoles owned by the international broadcasting company. 1) Adding More Snares to Snare Drums If you’re presented with an “inherited recording” to mix (one you didn’t engineer) with live drums where no bottom mic was used on the snare drum, or the track sheet says “snare” but all you’ve got to work with is a dull thump, try this: Route an aux send bus output from your mixing console to a small powered loudspeaker (or, if you have an extra power amp, a regular small passive loudspeaker)…

Beyma Professional has introduced the 12P80Nd, a 12-inch driver that is the newest member of the company’s P80Nd high-efficiency loudspeaker family, joining the 15P80Nd and the 18P80Nd in design concept and features. The 12P80Nd provides high efficiency (4,3 percent) and high sensitivity of 100,3 dB @ 1w/1m. The mechanical assembly features a forced air convection circuit which allows a very effective thermal dissipation of the voice coil, decreasing in a significant way the working temperature and so, decreasing the power…

The awards and accolades earned by the work of Stile Antico would be an accomplishment for even a seasoned vocal ensemble, but their meteoric rise to fame in the classical music world makes their successes all the more impressive. Comprised of twelve young British singers, Stile Antico first attracted the attention of harmonia mundi usa’s artistic director, Robina Young, at the 2005 Early Music Network International Young Artists’ Competition. From there, the group’s debut disc on the harmonia mundi label…
