While hum and buzz are often blamed on “improper grounding,” actually, this is rarely the case. Properly installed, fully code-compliant AC power distribution systems will develop small, entirely safe voltage differences between the safety grounds of all outlets. These normally insignificant voltages cause problems only when they couple into the signal path at a vulnerable signal interface. Let’s look at why unbalanced interfaces are extremely prone to this coupling and cause noise problems even when no safety ground connections exist.…

SurgeX International announce the release of the SX2200 Series of surge eliminators and power conditioners providing proprietary Advanced Series Mode surge protection and power conditioning for all types of audio, video and computer equipment. Four ranges offer region-specific connectivity and load-capable circuitry, with three models available in each range (RT, RL and standard). This gives consultants, contractors and end users a choice of surge eliminators with application-specific features, such as remote turn-on or front-panel task lamp connectivity. SX2210 models are…

“A cable is a source of potential trouble connecting two other sources of potential trouble.” The humor in this statement may be lost on those who regularly assemble sound systems. But a reality of sound systems is that a signal accumulates noise as it flows through equipment and cables. And once noise contaminates a signal, it’s essentially impossible to remove it without altering or degrading the original signal. For this reason, no system can be quieter than its noisiest link.…

After teaching seminars for more than 15 years now, it still amazes me how many otherwise competent professionals don’t understand the importance of proper equipment safety grounding. Even more shocking (pun intended), many routinely and casually disconnect safety grounds to solve noise problems! Generally speaking, the purpose of grounding is to electrically interconnect conductive objects, such as equipment, in order to minimize voltage differences between them. National Electric Code (NEC) requires that 120-volt AC power distribution in homes and other…

Just a quick note to point out that there will be two wireless microphone-related panel discussions at the upcoming Audio Engineering Society convention to be held at the Javits Center in New York this October. The AES convention, which is held annually in the U.S. on alternating coasts, always has a number of excellent workshops and panels covering sound reinforcement, and this year, must-see subjects such as “AC Power and Grounding”, “Microphone Dressing” and “Church and House of Worship”, among…

I’ve just fielded a call from someone in direct contact with the sound team regarding the alleged “sound system failure” last night on the Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour during its stop in Sturgis, South Dakota, where a series of events led to Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler injured and transported to a hospital after falling off the stage. The Associated Press wire report on the incident - picked up by news outlets around the country - begins: “Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler…

Nady Systems has announced the introduction of two new phantom power supply units—the SMPS-USB power supply with USB audio interface, and the SMPS-2X dual phantom power supply with two separate inputs that allow for stereo recording. The SMPS-USB is similar to Nady’s SMPS-1X but with an added USB port for quick, convenient audio recording directly into a computer. It provides 48V DC phantom power for condenser mics and features balanced XLR mic inputs and outputs to connect in-line with a…

Middle Atlantic Products is now offering its signature SignalSafe cords on all power products at no extra charge to customers. This cable technology is designed to reduce radiated AC magnetic fields in AV systems that induce noise in signal wiring. SignalSafe Power Cords feature the industry’s tightest AC power cord conductor twist rate and are manufactured with heavy 14-gauge conductors. This results in an AC magnetic field strength five times less than that of standard power cords, and significantly less…
