High Schoolers
When I was in high school, I sure didn’t comprehend as much about
audio as our young prodigy David does. I knew a lot about partying with
bands, though!
To his excellency presiding over his lovingly tweaked sound rig,
YES, MY PERCEPTIVE YOUNG FRIEND!
I have been reading your dead-on accurate replies to questions hilarious
and perplexing alike.
THOSE ARE EXCELLENT AND APPROPRIATE ADJECTIVES YOU ARE USING THERE!
YOU ARE QUITE A LITERATE YOUNG SOUNDMAN!
I really enjoy your “NO BRANDS” policy… really
helps drive home the fact that equipment is only a small percentage
of the battle towards great sound, how you use your available equipment
is the real trick!!
YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF YOUR CLASSMATES, DAVID.
IN FACT, YOU ARE AHEAD OF SOME OF MY CONTEMPORARIES!
YOU ARE DEFINITELY AHEAD OF THAT SUNIL GUY.
Anyway, I recently discovered an incredible site - http://www.controlbooth.com
- that has been tailored to high-school techies who have yet to know
the real work of a true stagehand. I’ve found its extensive forums
to be friendly to pros and newcomers alike. I just thought with the
recent influx of a younger generation that you could point them or at
least let them know of this wonderful resource.
THANK YOU, SIR! I KNOW WE HAVE OTHER YOUNG LADS AND LASSES WHO COME
HERE FOR ENLIGHTENMENT, I’M SURE THAT SITE
WILL BE HELPFUL TO THEM!
THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT IT IS THAT YOU CAN TALK ABOUT LIGHTING THERE.
BUT I’LL LET THAT SLIDE FOR NOW.
I also had a perplexing question regarding miking snare drums. I
have read somewhere that you should mic the top and the bottom of the
snare drum for a crisper sound, but wouldn’t that result in phase
cancellation? The article didn’t address that fact, so I was wondering
how you would go about miking a snare drum?
Thanks much,
David
THIS SEALS IT. YOU ARE A VERY THOUGHTFUL YOUNG SOUNDMAN, CAPABLE OF
ABSTRACTLY PERCEIVING THE TRUE TECHNICAL NATURE OF A SITUATION.
MANY FOLKS THROW THE BOTTOM MIC OUT OF PHASE.
PART OF WHAT MAKES PROSOUNDWEB.COM SO GREAT (THEY GIVE ME TWENTY BUCKS
EVERY TIME I SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT) IS THAT THE WISDOM OF THE LEGENDARY
MISTER DAVE RAT IS BROUGHT TO YOU.
IF YOU LOOK IN DAVE’S “TRANSMISSIONS” YOU WILL FIND
ONE
THAT DEALS WITH PRECISELY WHAT YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT.
HE EVEN RELATES IT TO THE KICK AND THE TOMS. DAVE IS A VERY THOROUGH
LECTURER, YOU SHOULD READ ALL OF HIS “TRANSMISSIONS.”
ALSO, CHECK OUT STUDY
HALL, DAVID!
IT PAINS ME TO SAY IT, BUT YOU WILL EVEN BENEFIT FROM OCCASIONALLY TAKING
A LOOK AT THE LIVE AUDIO
BOARD AND THE LAB
LOUNGE.
JUST TRY TO STAY GROUNDED AND NOT JOIN THE LESS STABLE MEMBERS OF THOSE
COMMUNITIES IN THEIR RACE TO THE STARS, AND BEYOND. IT CAN REALLY BE
A CONFUSING MAELSTROM OF MAD THEORIZING AND IGNORAMI OVER THERE!
BUT YOU ARE SENSIBLE, AND CENTERED.
I CAN TELL!
