The Old Soundman has a bad attitude. Always has, always will.

The nightclub he runs is out in the middle of nowhere, in a state that he forbids us to mention. Rockabilly, folksters, raprockers, world beaters, a-capella acts, they all play there, and they are all blown away by his laboriously tweaked-to-perfection sound system. The Old Soundman presides over the scene, chewing on his cigar, kicking back in his overstuffed chair.

The Old Soundman knows all, and is accepting your questions. Go ahead. Ask him what's troubling you in your heart of hearts. He understands people, venues, gear, sound companies and musicians. He just wants to help. Honest.

Egos and Feedback, Stage Volume and Guitars, Concert and Pictures, Huge Rooms and ZDM A very strange occurrence at a concert, questions about equalization, discussing of the best way to manage low end in big rooms, a fan of ZDM writes in, and the distasteful return of Abdul-EQ!

Insults and Evil DJ, Incompetence and Compressors, Hypnotists and Therapy, Unions and Sheds - Somebody has a big mouth; a DJ is taking a hard-working soundman on a hellride; a kid finally indicts the skills of his own generation; EQ and compression knowledge sought; a band ignores their own soundman; a young pilgrim wants to tour; slang-dictionary-r-us; plus a fan letter and an apology from the OSM to someone in Germany - in German!

Problems in Canada, ZDSSM, Straight Job, Teachin' - There's trouble in the Northlands, namely lack of gear in the first place, then shrill feedback even when there is gear, but a local has a bright idea; somebody thinks he can improve on the OSM's legendary ZDM Protocol, but has some really puzzling ways of expressing himself; another noble soundman bit the dust, but still has the nerve to ask a question about the OSM's productivity; lastly, how do you school a beginner soundman?

Girlfriends & Wagering, Death & Kick Drums, Kissing and Cabinets, Bartender & Drummer: Significant others are hassling hard-working soundmen, why we just go away and never die, the ups and downs of drum and bass sounds, a rockin’ club in the Midwest with a wall of speakers, complicating your mix with more than one mic on a cabinet, a meddling DJ, and a drummer who is forced to also be a soundman.

Anonymity, High Schoolers, Urban Myths and Smokin’, Coloring and Crap: People keep pestering the OSM about the strangest things – compression before or after EQ, where the heck a guitar mic is supposed to go, which is better, d.i. or mic for bass, someone’s Pavlovian association between a console and chain-smoking, and of course the one reader who can’t seem to understand that anonymous means ... anonymous!

Fans’N’Spam, Gates’N’Mom's PT. 2, Deep Questions, Freaky Frequencies– Like every other cybernaut the world over, the OSM is drowning under the despicable tsunami of spam. Also, you got your ducking, you got your keying, the legendary Mom’s Board will not die, and two philosopher kings are nodding off in the corner, right next to a nut who wants to shoot bluegrass musicians!

OSM vs. Winter NAMM '04. Call out the SWAT team! The Old Soundman is mad as hell at those sell-sell-sell guys at Winter NAMM in Anaheim! Hold him back! Although, once he listened to a classical guitar quartet and calmed down a little bit, he did find a few new products that met with his approval.

Stinking Shoeboxes, Club Restrictions, Youngsters Rebel, Organs and Bass - An authoritarian organist hobbles his audio guy, questionably restrictive policies exist elsewhere, an aspiring soundboy accuses the OSM of hating an entire generation, and why the real sound work gets done in teensy little poorly-equipped clubs.

Picking and Choosing, Good Questions, Plugs’n’Stuff, Loud Git-tars; The Old Soundman apologizes for his long absence, he had to go see a man about a dog. Now back up and watch out, because these know-nothing letter-writers have riled him up something fierce!

"16 Biggest Hits" by Merle Haggard: An Appreciation - Let's get one thing straight - this is one of the most beautifully engineered records in the history of music. Learn about subtle layering of steel guitar, piano, horns, Telecaster, and the mighty railroad spike!

THE ZDM PROTOCOL: Zoned Dual Mono! The OSM's first feature article! The Old Soundman shares his innovative alternative to the fiendish illusions known as 5.1 and "surround. Stick with the OSM - stick with ZDM!

Rack Monster, Balanced and Unbalanced, Dead Spot, and Soft Singers: So much anguish in the world, not just from people starving and going to war, but the infinite variations of idiocy in the world of live audio! But fear not, the OSM is on the case!

Getting Walked On, Gizmotrons, Magical Sound, Old Sound Homes – Why is there no place for geriatric soundmen? Can you teach an old soundman new tricks? Can there be magic without gizmos?

Sobersoundman, Drums'n'Bass, Songs for Testing, Indoor and Outdoor – Benefits of sobriety, roping and dogging problem "musicians," shelve those tired old Steely Dan tunes, and why life is not a box of chocolates, no matter where the gig is.

Lawyers and Open Mics, Pushing Graphics Up, Justice of the Peace, Delays and Mix Positions – Breakin' the law with graphic EQ's, persons of privilege and the lack thereof, pads, lowcuts, and duking it out over where the desk goes!

One Legged Phil, Salary and Benefits, Turnkey Systems, Single Point Source – A steady job is a good thing, visual aids to understand frequencies, LCR vs. mono arrays and ZDM, and why you should be careful with contractors!

Mom's Board, Frustrated Soundman, Subjective Opinions, To Bridge or Not – Travelling down memory lane to the 70’s, a career bummer, perceived vocal levels, and bridging amps.

Diversity, Factory Settings, Guitar EQ, Sales Dudes – Personalities clashing, DSP advice, handling sharp axes, and dullards at sales counters.

Paragon vs. Heritage, Boxes, Brands, Down On Toys, Tool Bag – Console anti-snobbery, speakers of the world, gimmickry reviled, brand allegiance and tools of the trade.

Popcorn, Generators, Obnoxious Drummer, National Tragedy – OSM on 9/11, and bemoaning insensitivity in percussionists, ridiculing those who overdrive venues, and explaining proper power procedures.

Speaker Controllers, Roadhouses, Audience Critics, Search Engines, Limiters & Domination – Unwelcome commentators from the peanut gallery, Internet resources, keeping volume controlled, and roadhouse gamblers.

Bass Bleedthru, What is a VCA, Wants To Go Studio, Auditorium – Someone wishes they were a recording engineer, somebody else needs a VCA tutorial, and how to control ugly rooms and ugly basses.

Nickname, Pay the Man, Rack em' Up, Violins'n'Wedges – Everybody’s gotta have a nickname, how to deal with stringed instruments, and cheapskates, and negligible signal loss between adjacent racks!

Gig Butt, Piano Gangsta, Reverb Application, Slang for Brazil – Sir, please! This is a family website! How to deal with a hooligan, tune a reverb, and talk that cool lingo like the OSM does.

Crush on Sheryl Crow, Fourteen and Mixing, Guitars Versus Vocals, Two Senses – The ambitious youth of today; struggling with ugly guitars; happiness – each to their own, and why we have opposable thumbs.

Why are you so Crabby, plus the Why are you so Crabby follow-up, Parabolic Microphones - A fine exchange, and some pointers on how to properly run a live Q&A.

Unity Gain, Sadistic Sideman, plus the Sadistic Sideman follow-up, Two Birdies – Another excellent exchange, some crazy kids and their rehearsal space, a compression question, and posers’n’faders.

Pianos, Money Issues, Why Do I Hate My Life, Friend's Band – Amplifying a troublesome instrument, career sorrow, the all-important benjamins, and gain staging for beautiful mixes.
