Celemony Melodyne Editing Software Awarded Technical Grammy

At the upcoming 54th annual Grammy Awards, the nod for Technical Grammy will go to Melodyne editing software from Celemony.

Since its release more than a decade ago, Melodyne has become a valuable tool for studio professionals, gaining recognition as one of the most powerful and unique audio editors available. PreSonus Studio One software is the only digital audio workstation software to fully and seamlessly integrate Melodyne into the program.

Producer and songwriter A.R. Rahman has called Melodyne a milestone in audio processing, saying, “Melodyne has completely changed how I record music. With Melodyne one can seamlessly correct out-of-tune notes in a piano track, change the chords in a harmonic accompaniment after it’s been recorded, or manipulate the timing within notes. The creation of music is enriched by this technology.”

PreSonus Studio One integrates Melodyne so tightly that it becomes essentially part of the program. Melodyne’s editing window opens within Studio One, and edits created in Melodyne can be immediately auditioned within Studio One, without cumbersome porting of files between the two programs.

“PreSonus has long recognized the unparalleled power Melodyne brings to audio editing, and we knew early on that integrating it into Studio One was a big part of creating the next generation of DAW software,” states Jim Odom, PreSonus co-founder, president and chief strategy officer. “We’re truly excited that the Recording Academy has recognized Celemony with this tremendous award, and we’re proud to be associated with such an innovative team.”

Yamaha Announces Merger Of Two U.S. Subsidiaries

Effective April 1, 2012, Yamaha Electronics Corporation, USA (YEC), which is the U.S. sales and marketing company for audiovisual products, will be merged into Yamaha’s U.S. sales and marketing subsidiary, Yamaha Corporation of America (YCA).

Both companies are located in Buena Park, California, with YEC originally established as a 100-percent-owned subsidiary of YCA in 1981.

The merger objectives include realizing maximum synergies, increasing management efficiency, principally in administrative business processes, and implementing closely coordinated sales and marketing of musical instruments and A/V products.

YEC offers home theater components and systems, featuring A/V receivers, amplifiers, Blu-ray/CD players, loudspeakers, desktop iPod speaker systems, home-theater-in-a-box (HTiB) pre-matched systems and the company’s exclusive Digital Sound Projectors single component surround sound solutions.

YCA is one of the largest subsidiaries of Yamaha Corporation, Japan and offers a full line of musical instruments and sound reinforcement products to the U.S. market. Products include acoustic and digital pianos, portable keyboards, guitars, acoustic and electronic drums, band and orchestral instruments, marching percussion products, synthesizers, professional digital and analog audio products, Steinberg recording products and Nexo commercial audio products.

Larry Italia, vice president and general manager of Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems Inc. (YCAS) subsidiary, states: ““The recent announced merger of Yamaha’s YEC and YCA groups has no organizational impact on the Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems subsidiary.

“There will no changes regarding YCAS staff, structure, distribution or policies. The Commercial Audio B-to-B markets and their channels are unique to most of YCA’s scope of business and was one of the reasons YCAS was established as a separate subsidiary. YCAS will not be distributing YEC consumer products, musical instruments, etc. as result of this merger.

“We congratulate our colleagues at YEC and YCA on their new organization and will be strongly supporting their efforts as always.”

The actions were the result of ongoing investigations by Shure representatives in both countries, in cooperation with local customs and law enforcement agencies.

The seized products will be destroyed under the supervision of customs agents.

In Peru, 2,303 counterfeit Shure microphones were seized by customs officials as the products were being imported into the country. The microphones included models C606, SM58, and PG58. Also confiscated were 1,594 cables and several thousand accessories, user guides, and product cartons, all branded with the Shure trademark.

The products were being imported by Fabi Export and Import, a company that is not an authorized Shure distributor or reseller.

In Paraguay, a delegation of officials from the customs authority raided a number of resellers in Ciudad del Este, including Music Shop, Music Brasil SA, and Musical World. Counterfeit products seized included SM57, SM58, Beta57A, and Beta58A microphones as well as PGX Digital Wireless components.

“Shure continues to take vigorous action against counterfeiters worldwide,” states Mark Humrichouser, general manager for the Shure Americas Business Unit. “We are committed to challenging the sale of counterfeit Shure products, not only to protect the interests of Shure and our distribution partners, but to ensure that consumers receive authentic products with the performance and quality for which Shure is famous.”

EAW Names Scott Pizzo North American Sales Manager, East

EAW has announced the appointment of Scott Pizzo to the position of North American sales manager, Eastern region.

Pizzo was previously part of the EAW team from 2003 through 2008, serving as U.S. sales director among other positions. The announcement was made by Jeff Rocha, EAW president, and reflects EAW’s ongoing emphasis on strengthening its sales channels and enhancing its customer relations.

“Re-hiring Scott is a critical step in strategically growing our internal capabilities,” Rocha states. “He brings tremendous experience and strong connections to dealers and end users. Plus, he’s intimately familiar with the EAW product line, so he can hit the ground running. Having Scott here in the home office will help us keep the sales perspective front-and-center.”

In his new capacity, Pizzo will focus on sales in the eastern half of North America, allowing Kurt Metzler, EAW’s existing North American sales manager, to focus on the West.

As EAW has positioned each sales resource closer to the customers they serve so they can deliver faster, more direct service, Pizzo and Metzler will manage the total North American territory cooperatively.

“Our business is complex to the point that an installation might be specified in one territory, awarded to a contractor in another and installed in a third,” Rocha notes. “It just makes sense for Scott and Kurt to collaborate in driving our North American growth in 2012 and beyond.”

Before rejoining EAW, Pizzo served as Eastern U.S. regional sales manager at Renkus-Heinz from 2008 through 2011. Prior to joining EAW for the first time in 2003, he worked as product specialist/technical sales at Lexicon Professional.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in music performance with an emphasis in recording and production technology from University of Lowell (now UMass Lowell). His experience spans both the studio world and event production, and in his free time, he does freelance event production for local-area organizations and businesses.

Pizzo states, “EAW is like home to me. I was an EAW owner before I was an employee, having purchased an FR253HR in 1996 or so. I am looking forward to reconnecting with customers and building EAW to the greatness it deserves, because EAW is the best. It’s good to be home.”

Alesis Announces Three New USB MIDI Keyboard Controllers

Alesis has introduced the Q61, QX61 and QX25 USB MIDI keyboard controllers. Alesis unveiled the trio of new controllers at the 2012 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California.

The Q-series USB MIDI controllers are the no-nonsense way to add expressive MIDI control to any production or performance. Each controller features USB MIDI for easy connection to Mac, PC, iOS devices* and traditional MIDI hardware modules, samplers and synthesizers.

The Q61 is a 61-note keyboard controller that works with virtually any music software and MIDI hardware devices. With velocity-sensitive keys, the Q61 offers a five-octave range of expression in a sleek, portable controller, built for the studio or stage. A full array of essential controls is onboard, including pitch and modulation wheels, octave up and down buttons, an assignable data slider, and the ability to send program changes from the keys.

The QX25 and QX61 are 25-note and 61-note keyboard controllers, respectively, that deliver powerful tactile control over any parameter of any favorite music software. Both controllers enable musicians to punch out a drumbeat on great-feeling pads, open up a filter with smooth, tight knobs, or adjust volume and playback of sequencing software with long faders and snappy buttons. The QX25 and QX61 bring immense parameter control and velocity-sensitive keyboards that get the composer’s hands off of the mouse and into the action for a more efficient, visceral music-making experience.

Whether someone is looking to trigger drum samples, tweak a software synthesizer or adjust individual tracks in a mix, the QX25 and QX61’s extensive layouts ensure appropriate feel and proper response thanks to their eight sliders and rotary knobs, four backlit drum pads and dedicated transport controls.

“What began with the Q49 has now grown into a family of controllers with sizes and configurations for any musician to capture their performances,” said Dan Radin, Product Manager, Alesis. “Whether you need the simplicity of the Q61, the power of the QX61 or the compact punch of the QX25, there’s a perfect Q-Series companion for every musician.”

The Q61, QX25 and QX61 will be available in Q2-2012 from musical instrument and pro audio retailers with U.S. estimated street prices of $149.00 (Q61), $199.00 (QX61) and $99.00 (QX25).

Crestron Core 3 UI Provides Fast, Easy Design Of Dynamic Touch Screen Interfaces

Crestron announced that its new Core 3 UI platform, the next generation of graphical user interface design, is now available on select Crestron touch screen models.

Core 3 UI gives Crestron programmers the ability to design dynamic touch screen interfaces to control theaters, lighting, thermostats, multi-room audio, digital music, video content, security cameras and other connected devices in almost half the time.

The unique Core 3 UI platform supports multiple Adobe Flash objects, HTML5, digital HD video, H.264 streaming video and Web browsing all at the same time. State-of-the-art technology such as SmartObjects and SmartScaling make it easy for programmers to deliver extremely dynamic, graphically rich and intuitive user experiences.

“Our industry has never seen anything like Core 3 UI,” said Sean Goldstein, Crestron VP of Marketing. “Custom installers and programmers can now leverage the latest graphic technologies and video formats to create ultra-cool GUIs for their clients, and reduce programming time by up to 30%.”

With Core 3 UI, customers can easily select their favorite movie in any room of the house by simply dragging and dropping the Blu-ray Disc® player icon into the preferred room on the touch screen. Programmers can even personalize the display by utilizing a wide selection of pre-installed Core 3 UI objects - from animated gauges and liquid sliders, to a gesture based canvas, the options are virtually endless.

Core 3 UI’s SmartObjects technology enables programmers to instantly add controls, user presets, and metadata interfaces for everything from simple keypads to complex media devices and environmental systems. Adding complex pre-configured objects such as ADMS, iPod, SiriusXM, or Pandora interfaces to a project is as simple as adding a button using the drag-and-drop operation, cutting days of programming time to hours or even minutes.

Core 3 UI’s SmartScaling technology takes the pain out of resizing multi-layered objects, such as virtual keypads. Rather than multiple objects (buttons, text, borders, etc.), each requiring resizing or other graphical editing, Core 3 UI treats a complex object as a single item.

Resizing a keypad, for example, is as simple as clicking on the object and dragging a handle to the desired size. Every element in the keypad is scaled perfectly, even text, providing users with a consistent look and feel. The end result is a single project can be deployed across multiple touch screens of varying sizes without any additional effort, reducing programming time by days.

“The popularity of the Apple iPhone and iPad, has raised consumer expectations when it comes to the user experience,” said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron VP of Technology. “Core 3 UI gives Crestron dealers and programmers the tools to meet or exceed those expectations while dramatically reducing programming time and costs.”

To see Core 3 UI technology in action, watch the Core 3 UI video. Learn more about creating astonishing touch screen interfaces with Core 3 UI.

Eugene First Church Of The Nazarene Builds For The Future With Powersoft Amplifiers

Powersoft M30D DSP+ETH amplifiers were recently installed at Eugene First Church of the Nazarene to power a new sound reinforcement system designed and installed by AGI Professional, also of Eugene, Oregon.

In the midst of fund-raising efforts to build a new 900-seat church, the leadership at Eugene First Church of the Nazarene was committed to providing the very best worship experience at their current 400-seat church. As a result, the new system was designed for the existing location with the capability of being built out to accommodate the new sanctuary when it is ready.

“It was important to the church leaders that the current contemporary services offer high quality audio,” explains Kyle Anderson, president of AGI Professional. “The ability to transition one system to the next was imperative.”

Each side of the new left-right system consists of one Fulcrum Acoustic CX1295 12” coaxial loudspeaker and one Fulcrum Acoustic US212 dual 12” subwoofer powered by a single Powersoft M30D DSP+ETH amplifier.

“The single rack-unit amplifiers offer an amazing amount of power,” notes Anderson. “The clients were blown away. We were able to replace four amplifiers with two one rack-units getting rid of 10 rack spaces – incredibly efficient on power and space with ample headroom.”

The two-channel M30D DSP+ETH amplifiers provide two inputs and outputs with each channel offering five bi-quad filters for system equalization, two crossovers, eight bi-quad filters, and RMS and peak limiters.

The DSP+ETH units are equipped with Powersoft’s Armonía Pro Audio Suite software which provides control and monitoring as well as preset management, uploading over the network, various crossover filter types (including IIR and FIR), and separate input and output EQs with a wide variety of filters.

“Tuning the system was a breeze. The EQ on these units was very nice to work with, very responsive – reminiscent of other high-end EQs on the market,” Anderson adds. “And because the amps are rack-mounted in a closet behind the stage, the ability to monitor and control them from front-of-house was another substantial improvement over the old system.”

“After seeing what the amplifiers have done for the new system the leadership at Eugene First Church of the Nazarene is very enthused to bring more into the new facility when it is built – which speaks volumes for how impressed they are with their performance,” Anderson concludes.
