Universal Audio Releases Manley Massive Passive EQ Plug-In For UAD-2 Platform

Stereo, 4-Band, passive, tube-based EQ plug-in, modeled after Manley Labs hardware

Universal Audio has announced the release of the highly anticipated Manley Massive Passive EQ plug-in, bringing UAD-2 users both the standard and mastering versions of a renowned EQ in one package.

Specifically, the two-channel, four-band Manley Massive Passive EQ utilizes design strengths from choice console, graphic, parametric and Pultec EQs — delivering a fundamentally different EQ that’s beyond compare.

The Massive Passive’s natural treatment of a signal lends itself to both radical tonal shaping as well as delicate vocal shading or subtle mastering enhancement.

“The Massive Passive EQ is one of our best-known products. We didn’t even want to entertain the idea of doing a plug-in unless it was really going to be done right,” commented EveAnna Manley, owner of Manley Laboratories. “Our expectations were high for the plug-in emulation to be spot-on. Working with Universal Audio, we believe they’ve totally nailed it.”

“The Massive Passive is truly the ultimate in mastering grade EQs. It sounds warm without ever being dull; it stays precise while remaining highly musical,” offered UAD Powered Plug-Ins Product Manager Will Shanks.

Available for purchase via UA’s Online Store for $299, the Manley Massive Passive EQ powered plug-in features include:
· Highly coveted 2-channel, 4-band, passive, tube EQ emulation plug-in, both standard and mastering versions
· Painstakingly modeled over a six month period and rigorously scrutinized by Manley Labs for authenticity
· Filter curves, band interdependencies, distortion and hysteretic behavior all represented in plug-in — yielding a unique, very musical and “open” sound

“Manley Labs represents quality, sonic excellence and unequivocal analog design expertise,” enthused Matt Ward, [resident of Universal Audio. “There has always been a special affinity between our companies, and we are elated to have EveAnna Manley joining us a plug-in partner for the UAD-2 platform.”

Charlie Wicks, Founder Of Pro Co Sound, Passes Away At Age 65

“The Captain” always challenged those around him to think-outside-of-the-box, as he did.

Charlie Wicks, founder, owner and CEO of Pro Co Sound,  passed away on the morning of March 11, 2010 due to complications related to his battle with cancer.

Charlie, 65, was an icon in the audio industry. He formed Pro Co in the early 1970’s to manufacture loudspeakers, and shifted to manufacturing cables and interconnect products in 1974.

From that starting point he successfully led the company over the next four decades to become a global presence in the audio industry.

Charlie was known affectionately throughout the audio industry by his non-traditional and self-proclaimed title of “The Captain of the Universe”. He was a rare and unique blend of tinker, teacher, philosopher, leader and salesman.

“The Captain” always challenged those around him to think-outside-of-the-box, as he did.

His company, Pro Co Sound, is a reflection of Charlie’s dedication to find solutions to his customers’ problems.

In recent years, Charlie’s health became an impediment to his direct involvement in the business. Debbe Stephenson, friend and president of Pro Co, stated, “While our hope has always been that Charlie would return healthy and able to run the company he loved so dearly and put so much of himself into, he will remain in our hearts as we continue to carry on his dream.”

While he worked tirelessly to grow and improve his business, Charlie was also a leader who cared deeply for his employees, customers and vendors.

He created and maintained a family-like environment at Pro Co. He wanted to foster an environment where all could contribute.

Sammy Ash, COO of Sam Ash Music, added, “He was a very good friend of this company and family. We have had a personal and professional relationship for close to 30 years now. He had a few personal tragedies but he never wore them on his sleeve. We always had a good chuckle.

“For those who didn’t know, his nickname was ‘Captain of the Universe’. To this day I do not know how that came about but it always seemed to fit when you saw him smile, it was as wide as the Grand Canyon or as ‘Big as the Universe.’ He will be missed.”

Charlie was a dog lover and was very involved in the care and well being of local abandoned animals.  He and his wife Willie formed the organization Canine Safe Harbor in 2006 where they personally provided care for dogs that had lost their families.

Most people who knew Charlie were acquainted with him through his business, but few knew he was also a gifted organist and performed in a musical group prior to forming Pro Co.  He received a Bachelor of the Arts degree from Kalamazoo College, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Charlie leaves behind his wife Willie, and son John. He was predeceased by his son Stacey.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Canine Safe Harbor, 8171 W. KL Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. (caninesafeharbor.com)

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Betzlers Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo, MI.

EAW Introduces SB1001 Large-Format Dual-18 Subwoofer

Successor to the popular SB1000 offering greater impact, power handling and output capabilities

EAW has unveiled the new SB1001 large-format dual-18-inch-loaded subwoofer, essentially a SB1002 large-format flyable sub without the rigging hardware.

While the dimensions of the SB1001 vented enclosure and the fundamental acoustical philosophy remain true to the SB1000, the core components are significantly enhanced to include larger 4.5-inch (115-mm) voice coils, 20 percent higher BI, and all-neodymium magnet structures. The result is greater impact, power handling and output capabilities.

Jeffrey Cox, Vice President, Pro Audio Group, stated, “The SB1001 is a particularly strong, cost-effective solution for those who are not necessarily looking to fly their subwoofers. Rigging hardware is not included, which allows us to offer an outstanding price point unmatched by any other manufacturer.

“However, if rigging is desired, rigging assemblies are available as a separate product. The SB1001 adds the contemporary capability of high power and performance in the widely used and recognized EAW subwoofer format.”

The unique driver mounting of the SB1001 maximizes cone area and allows for the integration of an extremely low-turbulence port while minimizing front area, providing the acoustical performance and physical configuration well suited for creating large subwoofer arrays.

Two 18-inch drivers employ large (4.5-inch) voice coils, as well as powerful neodymium magnet structures that also reduce weight. The operating frequency range of the SB1001 is 27 Hz to 161 Hz (± 3 dB).  Maximum sound pressure levels are 129 dB (average) and 135 dB (peak).

Dual Neutrik Speakon NL4 connectors are positioned on a rear-mounted section of the cabinet angled inward at approximately 45 degrees, allowing the SB1001 to position itself flush against walls in a groundstack configuration.

Additionally, the SB1001 can be permanently suspended with sixteen 3/8-inch – 16 points and is fully prepped and ready to receive the user-installable quick release rigging kit accessory for touring applications. The rugged grille protecting the drivers matches that of the KF760 Series, while the cabinet is finished in a durable, wear-resistant textured black paint.

To optimize LF response, the SB1001 subwoofer is designed for use with EAW’s UX8800 dual-mode digital processor featuring EAW Focusing Technology. Optimized processor settings for the UX8800 are available for download at www.eaw.com.

SB1001 Features:
- Direct radiating dual 18-inch design
- Optimally tuned with large, very low-turbulence port
- Unique woofer loading generates unbelievable impact
- Premium large coil 4.5-inch (115 mm) components with tremendous motor strength (+20%BI)
- Powerful neodymium magnet structures reduce system weight and increase output
- Can be ground stacked or permanently suspended with sixteen 3/8” – 16 points
- Quick release rigging accessory kit available for touring applications
- Dimensions(inches): 21.0 H x 29.8 W x 42.0 D; weight: 152 lbs.

The EAW SB1001 is shipping worldwide.
