So my last mix went out to the mastering people last week by choice
of the artist/client. I heard back that they thought the mixes were
too squashed/squished.... something, I am hearing this through my
client. The client is fine with the mixes but was wondering if I
could take off the buss compression for mastering. Unfortunately
I can’t unless my client wants to fully remix the album since
I mixed to the comp/limiter. I could reduce the GR, I suppose and
give it some more dynamic range... but I like it like it is.
I don’t think it sounds too squashed at all.... no pumping,
just kinda loud but there are some dynamics... the meters certainly
arent pegged from beginning to end and they move with the beat.
really, I don’t hear anything with the mixes that I want the
mastering person to change unless there is some odd EQ problem I
missed... I really just want them to trim tips and tails, and do
fadeouts, SRC, dither, and sequence with better equipment than I
have.
So I’m supposed to call the mastering guy monday to find out
what the deal is...
I do have some full 16/44.1 versions on my server but are the version
previous to the final versions... well, one got changed the other
didnt really.
So what should I say with the mastering person on Monday? I’m
kinda thinking it might be one of those things where they dont feel
like they are having to use the compressor kinda thing. I talked
to a couple people who have versions of the mixes i have been doing
and dont think its squashed either... or at least not offensively.

Why not post a link so we can have a listen for ourselves?
If you and your client are happy with the mixes, then I'd tell the
mastering guy to deal with it. As a mastering engineer, my job is
to help the client realize their goals, not mine...

These are FULL versions, not MP3.
I know the first [I got hope] has a bit of verb on it, but that’s
on purpose since it was the one tune that I was able to take that
allowance... the rest of the album is fairly dry. The second [last
man on the moon] changed a bit from this version with the level
of the acoustic was made a little lower and the solo section was
worked out a little better dealing with the slide mandolin part.
But they are basically about as "squashed" as these.
Unfortunately I didnt track this project, just mixed it so any comments
on tones is sometimes beyond my control [kick and bass I was fairly
unhappy with] and should of been better conceived in tracking.
I’m just looking to hear from all if these sound too squashed
and if i should back off the 2-buss comp and resend them new versions.
What I DONT want to happen is back off the tracks so they can compress
it in mastering. ya know? Like if I back off the tracks... that’s
where they will STAY.
