We’re looking at getting a pair of monitor speakers, but because
of all of our other expenses, we need to keep them fairly cheap
for now. We need a speaker/power solution for $500 or under, preferably.
So, either a pair of powered speakers for this price, or a speaker/amp
combo for this price.
I have heard lackluster things about certain manufacturers, so we
were looking at Tannoy
(Proto-Js since the Reveals plus the amp is over our price range)
or KRK Rokits,
and that's about it. Yamaha
NS10’s go for much more these days than even one year ago
(should have bought some then), and I have seen rather lackluster
reviews on Roland,
Mackie, and
a few others.
If we go for passive speakers (like the KRK Rokits, for example),
what power amp would you recommend? Hafler?
Alesis? Who
makes a good monitor power amp in the 100-watt range, in the $200
or so price range?
We want the best we can get for the money, so any suggestions?

Aren't the (active) KRK V4's around $500 (on sale) now? I liked
those the best in this range, and you wouldn't have to screw around
with a separate amp.

Believe it or not, the old Alesis Monitor One speakers can be had
without (spending) an arm and a leg, and a quiet amp like a Samson
Servo can be had for less than $200 - this combo is not to bad.

Yes I used to like them (Alesis Monitor One’s) too, and I
have a (Samson) Servo at home to drive my NS10 and I think it works
really well.
What about M-Audio...anybody
tried em?

Where have you seen the KRK V4’s on sale for $500? I see them
for $600/pair at most places. http://www.8thstreetmusic.com
has them for $529 for the pair, and BHP
PhotoVideo has them for $260 ea.
I can actually get a pair of KRK K-Roks for about $160. Then figure
$200 for an amp. Is the $360 vs $530 worth the price difference?

$529 sounds like a good price. I was guessing by now they had gone
down a little from $600 or so.
Yes, I think it's more than worth the price difference to get an
integrated monitoring match like the V4's soundwise. To my (non-pro)
ears they sounded awesome, and that you could translate mixes well
with them.
Eventually you might want to add a decent (or better) subwoofer
to hear the bottom even better to whatever you choose BTW.

In that price range I bought some Yorkville
powered monitors, the YSM p1. I love them, but I've never had anything
else either... A few months ago I had done a lot of research and
asked a ton of questions about monitors, and Yorkville is what the
majority of people recommended.
The mention of Yorkville here may evoke love or hate here, so it
will be interesting to see what any additional replies from the
experienced guys say. It might spur some discussion that may be
helpful.
I learned the most by reading the bickering between the experienced
guys about which monitors I should get!

I hear for the price the “Yorkies” simply rock... I
wanna hear em myself though...

I use Alesis Monitor One’s. I got them new for $200. I’m
going to buy a Crown
D-75 (amplifier) in a week or so most likely. From my research this
is an acceptable combo. The (used) Crown amp will most likely cost
a little over a hundred (dollars), making for a very cheap setup.
Also, I love Tannoy Reveal, and the M-Audio monitors have been regarded
highly by some engineers I've talked to.
The Monitor One’s are very sharp. They’re probably hyping
quite a bit, I got them to use in place of NS10's for good relevant
reference to other studios and mixes and such. I think they accomplish
this.

I’ve got a pair of the Event TR5’s as nearfield monitors.
I’ve been very happy with them, and they are inexpensive,
powered, with, balanced and unbalanced inputs. Worth checking out.

Me likes the Yorkville YSm1's - the passives go for about $200;
the actives go for something like $400 (maybe).

For the money, the M-Audio B8X's can't be beat. Of course, I’m
only referring to the "under $500" flavor of monitors,
but they are sweet for the price.

I have been relying on my “Yorky” YSM1P's for a few
months now, and my mixes have been translating extremely well to
other audio "venues". I highly recommend them. Best of
luck on your final decision, for it is an important one.

Check out the KRK V6's. I like mine. You can grind the Banjo (Guitar)
Center to $600 or so.

I picked up a pair of the Event Tuned Reference 8's for $499 at
Banjo Center.. They do the job for me, and the low end is there
without being hyped.

I do like the Event offerings, whether the non-active 20/20s or
the active ones, as long as they have the 8-inch woofer. Bad mixes
sound bad and good mixes sound good. You don't end up with a mix
that's too hyped on the bottom end because you mixed with too small
a woofer.

I got a pair of M-Audio SP5Bs for $300, and I'm very happy with
the way they sound. The only problem is that they start to lose
the low-end punch around 125 Hz, so you have to either work around
it or reference the bass in some other way.

I started with a pair of Event 20/20's, unpowered. They sounded
great but didn't translate my mixes well to other systems. In my
room, which is less then perfect, they didn't do it for me. I would
try a bunch of speakers in your room. Most of the music “supermarkets”
have a good selection of speakers in this price range, and they
will allow you to return them. My two cents.
