The Art of Recording

ProSoundweb announces three complete chapters from Dr. William Moylan’s essential book, (The Art of Recording: Creative Resources of Music Production and Audio). The final version of this book will be published by Focal Press in early 2002. PSW feels very fortunate to share this vital recording information even as it continues to undergo current revisions.

Dr. Moylan’s book was the first to go beyond superficial techniques to examine in-depth how the basic creative process translates into manipulation of recording media. A noted composer as well as recording engineer and producer, Moylan bridges the gap between musical creativity and the recording art, leading the reader intuitively through the entire process using exercises and examples taken from well-known recordings.

In this first installment, The Artistic Elements of Recording Production, Moylan deals with the basics of all musical recordings and guides the reader through proven techniques for identifying, balancing and creatively modifying the elements to achieve the desired artistic goal.

In the second installment, Preliminary Stages—Defining the Materials of the Project, Dr. Moylan looks at all the elements that make up a successful music recording. What sounds will be included, and how are they to be created? And by what means, human or electronic? Moylan then evaluates the various tools and techniques used in sound capture (microphone selection and placement), sound recording (analog and digital technologies), sound modification (effects) and monitoring (studio monitors selection, placement and listening space acoustics).

In the third installment, The Process of Evaluating Sound, Dr. Moylan presents the reader with a guided, step-by-step method for developing the heightened perception skills that can lead to better recordings. Moylan first reviews the basic elements of any sound event—pitch, dynamics, duration and timbe—and then presents exercises for improving your ability to perceive, analyze and make sound creative judgments in response. Moylan also outlines a fascinating graphing technique for visualizing complex sound events, using the Beatles “She Said She Said” as an example.
