Hi again -

I'm looking to add some more mics to my rig, in particular a kick drum mic and two overheads. Use will be mainly live sound, though occasionally for studio use too. The contenders are:

Kick:
AKG D112
Sennheiser e602
Shure Beta 52

Overheads:
AKG C1000s
AKG C2000
AKG C3000B

Has anyone got any advice re these different mics. As far as the overheads go, I would prefer the larger diaphragm condensers (ie the 2000 or the 3000) but for live work, is the better response and pickup pattern worth the extra cost?

Cheers,
Mike

In all the reactions I miss the Beyerdynamic TGX-50 kick drum mic, which I mainly use. I like it, it has a more natural sound to me (as fas as that is possible). I also own several Sennheisers 421, a 422, a D12 and a Beta 91. The Beta 91 is easy to use. I don't like the sound of the D112.

As I read before in the reactions, it has that clicky sound and every kick drum tend to sound the same. Although I used it accedentaly on a recording and then the clicky sound was usefull, but for live it is to much. Used once a E 602 on a well tuned kick drum and the sound was horrible coloured.

The rental company had also a Beyerdynamic TGX-50 and back was the sound. For overhead I would choose Neumann KM184. But maybe they are too expensive in America. In Germany I can get them for around $400,-.

An good alternative is the Shure SM 81 and a unknow brand called MB or Haun from Germany aswell, type 440 they sound great for the money. In Holland they cost around $ 250,-. The sound better than the AKG C391's and C1000's. I don't know about big diagram condensors mics, but the only ones I used several times live, where the Neumann U87. They are unbeatble but very expensive. I think the Shure KSM32 are a good alternative.

For kick I'd recommend the Audio Technika ATM25. For hat and overheads, here's a recommendation from left field -- the Oktava 012.
