Hi folks,
I know the trusty Shures are used quite often (SM 57/58) because
of they're clarity/unbelievable value for the $. Anybody have some
secret low cost gems you have discovered?

the senn E609 is a really good electric guitar mic.
I agree it aint no 409, but it is a damn good mic, and cheap!! I
little different on the bottom compared to the 409, but very good.

I have two favorite mics for electric guitar. I like the Audix D2
for the situations in which I feel the guitar sound is a little
thin. This is a warm sounding mic with a little nudge on the bottom.
For the guitartist who is getting an excellent sound I prefer the
Audix D1 which is relatively flat and capable of producing avery
natural and uncolored sound.

I like the 548 better than the SM57. I'm sure ML would have something
to say about them - Showco once used them by the boatload (that's
where mine came from).

I have been using Audix D3's on gtr for a few years now with very
good results.

I came across a couple of these recently and rather like 'em. They're
called Blackheart. Looks kinda AKG D12ish, but were made by Sennheiser
I believe. Very nice on guitar. An AKG D12 does wonders as well
when found at a reasonable price.

CAD Equitek E-100. You can probably get 'em for less than $200.
A large-diaphragm (although the capsule isn't that large) condenser
mic. Stick it in front of the Marshall, or the Fender, or whathaveyou,
and whammo. It's real good. Plus, they lie flat against the amp
(like the MD409) so the guitarist can do all sorts of feedback weirdness
and not knock the mic outta position.
Recently, I've been using my EV 308s for guitar amps. Less peaky
than an SM57 (and really, who needs that presence peak on a guitar
amp?), and cardioid, so less proximity effect than the EV 408 (and
really, who needs that bass boost on a guitar amp?).
Plus, the neat little egg-shaped thing lets you position it so it
lies flat against the amp, like the E-100. I don't think EV makes
this guy anymore, which is a shame. The EV 468, which is the 408's
next-year's model, is supposed to be fairly inexpensive too.
And the 409 is great, albeit not a "low-priced gem." Wish
I'd bought a pair some years back.
We have a couple of Beta 57As at one of the clubs, and I prefer
it to the SM57 on guitars, but I use it on loud-band vox, where
it rules.

- “We have a couple of Beta 57As at one of the clubs, and

Many times it's vice versa for me. I did some recording in studio
and used double microphoning technique with B-word B-2 and MD421
;-) Very sweet combination indeed.
If someone wants to go with something affordable then AKG D770.
Beats SM 57 every time.
