I have hear of a Church in LA that held 8000 seating, and I was told that they hit like 172db at the soundboard, is that possible? And I told someone about this and they said that there is no way to exceed 130db to the board. So I am looking for the highest db level to the soundboard that anyone has seen.

Hi

172 dB is loud, but is a level that can be produced in air.
An array of 6 of the levitation transducers we used to make at Intersonics could produce about 175 dB at the center of the array at 21 KHz.

Such a sound field could actually levitate dense objects like Lead or Tungsten or could support less dense objects like glass and ceramic at temperatures up to about 2500 deg C.

That temperature is like the sound in being on the "far side of hot", a pea sized sample at 2500C is bright enough to light a room.

At 175 dB, one feels the sound as you move your fingers through it, if you allow a small crack between fingers, one gets a good burn from acoustic friction.

If one places an un lit cigarette in the field, it ignites from acoustic friction, sound absorbing foam disintegrates / melts.

This would be a pretty loud concert, thankfully even with ones head in the horn, speakers don't go that loud.

That thought reminds me of sort of a "Groupie" that followed our band (in the old days) he fell asleep (better living through chemistry) during warm up, up against the guitar players speakers.

The fellow stayed right there the whole show doing his "weekend at Bernie's imitation".

He started to wake up from his "nap" when his friends accidentally dropped him in the parking lot "Wwwhere are we"?
Cheers

Gee whiz, Tom, what's left for you in the way of entertainment? Doesn't it seem sometimes like you've pretty much been there and done all that?

Next time my lights go dim for a few seconds, I'll know you're out there somewhere cooking up a new project...

I think on average, most live music shows are going to run between 105-115db.

Cory
