Jay: Actually, no. Up until this point we have done no audio transfer electronically. Being a "private" studio, (meaning only for our label’s artists), we don't have the need to interface with many other studios, for track comping of anything like that.
Jay (continued): We basically do everything right up until mastering, in house, then ship out the hard drives to the mastering house. But many studios have to be wired we’ll probably look at the possibility soon, and if it can benefit us.
Tivo: Now that some of the Internet hype has calmed, do you see a realistic possibility of being able to web cast services?
Jay: Do you mean recording services?
Tivo: No - broadcast via Internet.
Jay: Yes, I definitely see that as a possibility. However it is going to require more demand to make it a viable path to take.
Ron K: Can you recommend any new tracks that you're using or considering for worship services?
Jay: Wow, that's a great question, and one that I hear all the time. I think "good tracks" are so hard to find for several reasons. The differences in worship styles, to begin with. But I personally like to keep close tabs on “Vineyard”, “Hosanna”, and personal favorite artists like Danny Chambers, and Lincoln Brewster.
Jay (continued): I find I like about two out of 10 songs that come out in the commercial market. As a result I really encourage churches to write their own music. If you have a decent songwriter in the church, he or she will hit a vein with respect to the congregation that a national artist won’t. Our youth band writes all originals, and the adult does so about 30 percent of the time now.
Rick: I'm looking for an honest, accurate set of studio monitors. What are you using, and/or do you have other recommendations?
Jay: We use the Mackie HR824's. I also like Genelec.
Music Man: What kind of equipment-audio-do you prefer to use?
Jay: Wow, that depends greatly on the application. For installed use, I prefer EAW, with Crown amplification. I like consoles by Allen & Heath and Midas.
JC: Are you doing any live mixing these days?
Jay: I haven't in a few months - the studio work has taken over as we are preparing for four national releases, but I love mixing live.
Too much coffee: Do you do anything with video production?
Jay: Yes. Both video and TV filming, editing and broadcast.
Too much coffee: Mac setup, or IBM?
