Grampa Lee: When you first see a new room, what is your "familiarity
drill"?
OSM: Have a smoke with the crew. Get on a 58, make low woofing noises
and awful 800/1.6K sounds. Make hi hat sounds. Playing CD’s
is secondary. Walk for coverage as well as tone.
AlanH: Favorite 3 consoles in ranges... under 10K.... under 50K....
and above?
OSM: Ahhh - why the prices? What's your point? The 4K is OK. Gamble
is great. I am really far more concerned with the rig downstream.
I would rather be on a Series Five on a spectacular set of speakers
and amps than on a Gamble on a bogus set of boxes. That's just me.
Like many people, I enjoy the Midas. ATI looks great; have never
used it. Look, I will make a gig work on a Mackie - I don't care.
Just give me headroom to drive at.
Brad Nelson: What do you think of the new line array stuff, V-DOSC,
EAW, Vertec, etc.?
OSM: V-DOSC I have heard. None of the others. V-DOSC is like a high-pressure
fire hose. It can really put out some sound. Some mixers are transparent
on it, which is always impressive, i.e., each instrument onstage
sounds just like itself. I would say a 2,500-seat venue is when
you can really start to enjoy it.
PaulyB: Do you prefer to insert your graphic EQ on the mains or
run them in line?
OSM: I happen to insert them. I have used them in-line when on a
touring system that did not need to adapt to anyone else's preferences.
In the club, people may want to insert their personal compression.
Chence W: What type of music do you play over the rig when you’re
listening to it?
OSM: A variety. Some that’s more noisy and rugged, where
you find out the power limits of the system. Some quieter, clearer
selections show you the fidelity and high-end response.
PaulyB: What does the OSM think about running tweets on an aux (like
Rat)?
OSM: Respect to Dave Rat! It is his preference and works for him.
I do not practice it.
The best boards in the world have a hi-pass AND a lo-pass. That
is enough for me.
Chence W: What is your favorite reverb unit?
OSM: Tie between the TC and the 480.
gus: When dealing with bad instrument sounds, can you polish a turd?
Or is it garbage in, garbage out?
OSM: GIGO.You do what you can.
chat.boy: On behalf of ProSoundWeb, I'd like to thank his “Oldlieness”
for joining us this evening. The chat was moderated by Dave Dermont,
Another Dave.
OSM: You are welcome, chat.boy! Thanks AD!
Moderator: You are welcome, Old Man.
chat.boy: Be sure and stop by the Live Audio chat room before you
split for "after chat”.
OSM: I'm going to the club and having a Guinness and a Jager shot.
Good night!
