David: If you will permit me, box design would never have achieved the results we have achieved with the B-One. It's horn design that does it. With regard to modern drivers...
We certainly appreciate the drivers we have access to, but drivers are still the limiting factor. Bassmaxx horn technology does far, far more than the driver does for the quality of the sound. In the case of the B-One, the horn dominates the output characteristics. It 's efficiency allows for more output before the driver begins to break up and color the sound.

Randy: Any news on the Aura reinforced driver?

David: They should be arriving about the middle of next week. We've had one beta test model for a while, and it sounds like it's going to be a winner.

Randy: As you probably read on the live audio board, I’ve done a comparison of the B-One with the (EAW) SB1000 and immediately noticed a cleaner (?) sound. It seemed tighter and definitely went lower. How about a white paper to explain what we already know?

David: What can I say? We're putting together a white paper. Don't expect to be able to go out and build copies based on the contents, but it will give clear comparisons and reasoning for the design choices.

yam4000vca: Will this same technology translate to full-range systems as well?

David: The technology was originally developed for full-range systems. Systems that needed to produce full-range sound from a single driver, with sufficient output in the low frequencies to not need a separate subwoofer. Also to be powered with 5- and 10-watt tube amplifiers. We scaled it up to the size and power of the B-One. Should we scale up a full range version?

Paul Bell: Hey David - Did I read right that the horn in your cabinet is 13 feet?

David: Yes, a little over.

Randy: I was told that McCauley was also evaluating the B-One. Any news?

David: McCauley did some comparative testing between their driver and the Seismic loaded into the B-One. The report was that the drivers were far more similar loaded into the B-One than they were loaded into any box they had ever tested. He also said "They move air!

HarryB: If not driven as hard, would there be any problem with using lesser drivers?

David: The drivers need to have stiff cones. We have tested, and sold, B-Ones with Eminence Omega Pro 18’s. They work great, but don’t have quite the LF extension or the power handling of the bigger, more expensive drivers. The cones of some of the drivers we tested failed within 5 minutes. There are limitations. The more power you can feed into the voice coil, the stiffer the cone will have to be.

Michael: I would think a bass horn is a powerful, useful device but will require system EQ to remove resonant areas. Any comment on this?
