Joe Gilder frequently talks about how equipment isn’t the “end-all, be-all” in the pursuit of recording and creative excellence, instead focusing on the importance of being able to use what you already have to its utmost, and further, to strive for constant improvement in technique and then put that into practice.

However, his big exception to the rule is when a new tool can be used to make a definitively enhancement to the creative process—and therefore the song and recording.

In the following video, Joe provides further context on the discussion and then also goes through a great example of a tool he deployed that proved perfect in furthering the vision for a new song while making for an overall better recording.
