Outline Butterfly and Mantas loudspeaker systems amplified the voice of Pope Francis on the occasion of the Holy Mass celebrated on the Plain of Sibari before a crowd of 250,000.

A stage measuring approximately 50 x 25 meters was erected for the event, along with the installation of four maxi-screens and 20 km of barriers.

The 35,000-seat audience area measured 650 metres (2,132 ft) by 250 (820 ft). Dee Jay Service located in Rende (Cosenza)—a well-known Calabrian company that has been in the industry for more than 30 years—was responsible for the sound reinforcement system. Having recently expanded its inventory of Outline loudspeakers, Dee Jay Service deployed 56 Butterfly and 24 Mantas modules to cover the audience. An additional 24 Subtech 218 subs boosted the low frequency to the area.

The Papal chair was covered by two Outline DVS 8, two stage monitor H.A.R.D. 212 and two H.A.R.D. 115 speakers. The choir utilized H.A.R.D. 212 monitors while Tripla, Doppia and DVS 10 enclosures covered other areas of the stage.

“We received flattering feedback from broadcasters RAI TV and Vatican Radio for the clear reproduction of Pope Francis’s message and the even distribution of the sound over the entire area,” explains Remo Florio, Dee Jay Service owner. “Looking back, I think that - considering the size of the area - anybody else would have thought that the area required a large-format PA, but the Butterfly is very compact and did the job extremely well.”

Florio believes that the key to the line array’s success is in its aiming. The Butterfly is incredibly precise which allows the sound to be delivered only where it is needed.

“The Openarray 3D software from Outline is terrific,” he adds. “In the capable of the PA man Francesco Spadaccino, we managed to work wonders.”

Luigi Lombardi of Mods Art, Outline Italian distributor, concludes: “I’m very pleased that once again the Outline network worked wonderfully. It was founded with the intent of supporting our clients in the most important stages of their work. In fact, collaboration between companies has become fundamental.”
