A digital console may have buried menus and take attention away from things, but what it also does is give you access to many things in one place. Is it easier to look at 5 different pieces of outboard gear, or one screen with places to click or touch? At some point you gotta go with the progression of the industry to adapt, not turn it backwards by wanting to hold onto the old school way of doing things. Why use a rack full of “hardware” components that you need to bring extra along and take up space when you can have several times that number in plugins all in one spot? Adapt and move forward in process and thought or be left behind.

But Dave still makes a valid point. There’s no reason the digital desk manufacturers couldn’t produce some form of assignable outboard control. In today’s world, producing an encoder/touch screen combo is relatively inexpensive. They should do it and allow a purchaser to link up as many of these outboard controls as possible with completely customizable interfaces. With all the advancement of digital, there’s really no excuse.
